Hey guys,
Curious question.
Has anybody ever tried to bolt the 6G72/4 bellhousing on to a 4G63/4 transmission (or vice versa) - Does the bellhousing line up with the trans casing?
Also, are the bellhousings different between auto/manual?

Mitsubishi do not use bell housings as such.
Clutch / torque converter end of the transmission is really the front casing half.
6G72/4 has a big Vee shaped cutaway at the top centre of both the manual and automatic transmissions to clear part of the cooling system.
4G63 does not as it is an inline engine.
Just wish that Mits did it the Ford way with a separate bellhousing.
I suspect that if you have the same transmission type. e.g. it would be possible to change the casings over.
I have been going down this road as I have an EVO gerabox in my garage but so far have not been able to find the clutch housing half for a 6G7* engined AWD car.

I'm not really sure what you mean by Mitsubishi's do not have a bellhousing, I have 3x 6G72 manual boxes at my mums place and I have removed the bellhousing from one and given it to ih8hsv as his has a hole in it. One of the questions here was is the bellhousing on the auto/manual the same? Reason I ask is if so, can you not just take the bellhousing from the 6G74-AWD transmission and bolt it on to a 4G63T 5sp transmission?
Obviously some modification would be required (clutch fork etc...)

Mitsu bell housing is part of the transmission, AFAIK. Remove it and you expose the internal bits. Saves space/length over having a separate bell housing and gearbox cover. Other makes (rear wheel drive) have separate bell housings, when removed the gearbox itself is still intact and can be bolted to any bell housing with the same gearbox to bell housing bolt pattern.
Depends on how you define what a "bell housing" is really.
Your question "Does the bellhousing line up with the trans casing?" is irrelevant as its one piece. Its not simply a matter of drilling the bell housing to suit the gearbox end cover bolt pattern.
I doubt the auto and manual box end covers/bell housing are the same, as the internals of the boxes are different, and (again AFAIK) run different starter motors.
No chance of bolting either manual or auto one from a 6G74 to a four cylinder, I would imagine.

Can confirm 100% the starter motor is the same. I'm using my stock (auto) starter.

god i wish i new that the starters were the same back when i had my lancer cb gsr that we put a 4g63 in, the thing chewed 4 starters, pissed out a whole bunch of oil, then i sold it :(

Not sure between 4G63/6G7X, but auto/manual on 6G7X are definately the same :)

It varies from model to model, I know that an auto starter from a TR auto 2.6 won't fit on a TS 2.6 manual. lol He has said the 6G7X auto and manual starters are the same, you can't extend that to other mitsu engines.
