 My 3L TS has developed a miss fire. Started on thursday and when i'm accelerating under 2,000rpm in any gear it'll miss until i'm over 2,000. It sometimes gets worse and misses up to 4,000rpm, and all i do is back off and hit it again and it clears itself. It also goes away when the motor isn't up to full temperature and sometimes isn't there at all. The only thing i have checked is the dizzy and i cleaned up the points and that made **** all difference. I'm going now to grab a new set of plugs and give that a wirl. Any ideas on what else it could be plz let me know.

Cheers boys and girls

Ignition and Timing?

Those are guesses, whether or no they are educated im not sure. I'll look into that one for you though.

doubt it would be timing because if it was it'd run shithouse all the time. I had that problem last year when my timing belt jumped 3 teeth on the back bank and 2 on the front bank and nearly destroyed my engine. But as you said ignition could be the problem

Did you change the rotor as well?

Does the coil on yours have a condenser? That might be gone too I had a similar problem on my old meteor and that was the cause

no i didn't change the rotor. Yeah i do hav a condensor, well thats what my old man said becuase we run a radio and you need 1. He doesn't think it's electrical because the problem is too variable-he still reckons its plugs but i don't know

Im reading the Gregorys TS Manual, its for a 2.6 but im sure the same principle applys

Engine Misses at Idling Speed:

1. Air leak in inlet manifold, plenum chamber or throttle body gaskets: Check for air leaks by running oil around the joints. If Airleak is detected and cannot be rectified by tightening the nuts, renew the gasket.

2. Blown head gasket: Check cylinder compression and renew as neccessary

3. Weak or broken valve springs: Remove the rocker cover and check the condition of the valve springs

4. Burnt Valves or Seats in the cylinder head: Check the cylinder compressions and overhaul the head as neccessary.

Hope this helps and sorry if it doesn't.

Just my guess, but pinging/knocking/detonation... ?

It would explain why it happens when it isn't up to full temperature... not hot enough to set off any carbon deposits in the cylinder... It'd probably explain the randomness of it also... Whenever a deposit heats up high enough in the compression stroke, it can be hot enough to cause premature combustion in the cylinder, giving you these misfire symptoms... Definately isn't very good for the engine..

Solutions... hmm.. depends on how bad it is... Could be the piston seals are getting worn out and a part of it has come away... dirty plugs? valves? Basically clean the cylinder out....

A temporary (though costly) solution _might_ be to use higher octane fuel... It supposedly will burn a lot more umm... I can't think of the word.. basically in one motion instead of igniting from two sources (carbon deposit and spark) Doesn't always work though..

Get someone to sit in the car and rev the engine slightly and see if you can hear it yourself... That's just my guess though... could be completely off...

I think she's all good now. Just through in some new plugs, just regular BOSCH plugs and the problems gone. I think the prob was because i've got worn valve guides, oil is getting into the upper cylinder. When i removed the plugs i noticed there was a lot of carbon build up around the plug so i hope these plugs hold out till I get my new engine. For the guys who posted, thank you very much.

Cheers, Jason
