Hi all,
I am currently replacing the drivers side drive shaft as the inner CV joint was cactus.
I have sucessfully removed most of the shaft except the inner CV joint housing (race).
The drive shaft and CV joint knuckle came out easily as the inner CV joint boot was split. It basically just fell out when i prized the outer CV joint from the wheel hub.
Now i just need to prize the inner CV joint housing (race) from the trans.
This is proving to be difficult.
Question i have is
Do i have to unbolt any or all of the retaining bolts surrounding the inner CV joint housing?
I can see three or maybe four of them.
I dont want to do any damage to the trans. It seems like the only thing stopping the inner CV joint housing is these bolts.
I have drained the trans anyway just for good measure.
If any one can advise that would be great! I have rego coming up on the 31st Dec and this is the only thing stopping me at the moment.
Cheers

All the tr /ts driverside cvs V6 and 4 cyl cvs
i just took off the inner cv boot
and out came the three bearing set up
no clip
if the cv inner is a ball and race
there is a small wire circlip that you pop off inner edge of the housing spline part
i never have had to take out that cv bearing housing out of the gearbox

Hi Magna buff,
As i'm replacing the entire drive shaft (drivers side) the replacement is a whole unit (CV tri bearings pre packed and assembled)
The drive shaft i'm taking out and CV's (inner and outer) on the drive shaft are the same.
Ive removed the shaft and because the inner CV boot had split completely the shaft and tri bearing CV came out. Whats left attached to the gearbox is the race that the inner CV joint resides within.
Its that part that wont budge. Its a green plastic part with the inner end of it splined into the gearbox.
I will try and find the cable for my phone to upload a photo i have as you have way more knowledge of this than i do.
If anyone else has done this before and can shed light on it then please post it up.
Cheers

the 4cyl model is just a spline and a circlip
the circlips may be tough to budge
they just need to be levered out with a tyre lever or large screwdriver

Hey All,
Here are some photos. If you see the first image shows the race (housing) for the inner CV joint. There is a 4 bolts round the outer edge of the race in the gearbox housing.
Do these need to come off to get the rest of the drive shaft out?

Hey Magna Buff,
Cheers mate for the info. Glad to know i dont have to unbolt the bolts around the tripod housing.
Cheers for looking that up.
Now to find my tyre lever and get stuck into it! (Large screw driver doesnt give enough punch to get it free from the gearbox
I'm determined to finish this today!!
Happy new year!!

by the diagrams in both repair manuals 4 and 6 cyl
all drive shafts have a spline on the drivers side
you just have to lever the shafts out with a lever of some kind
without damaging the seals
i have read through the procedures in both manuals
and they dont mention any bolts to undo
try the lever method in case those bolts are the seal housing
(picture one)
put the lever in between the gearbox housing and the green part and it should pop out
there may be some oil

Yeh my Haynes manual also does not mention the bolts also.
Levering it with even a crow bar is proving tough. The green housing and spline inside move around a little but wont come out without a fight.
Not worried about oil comeing out as i drain the trans already over night.
I gonna get a big feed and have another crack at it. I think its the circlip on the spline thats holding it in there well.

Yeah!!!!! finally got it out.
Two bottom bolts of the four circled around the housing bolted into the gear box were removed and then it just prized out fairly easily!!
many thanks Magna Buff for the speedy info!!
Finally i can now get the new drive shaft installed and this puppy registered again!!
Cheers!!
Hi sorry for the late info, but you shouldn't have to unbolt any of those bolts around that housing, but I know what you mean as I had to replace a trans and when pulling out the drive shafts I had the same problem, but eventually it came out. I tried for about an hour and it wouldn't come out then I tried one more time and it just fell out,,,,BLOODY THING.
