hi all,
lately my auto seems to slam into gear (especially overdrive). it dosnt slip or grone but you really notice the shifts from and too overdrive more than any other. the others are not alot better but it sounds like someone is banging about in their with a lump of wood. it wont change to anything below 3rd unless you stop completely or boot it. i have a feeling if it were manual it would have a bit more get up and go seeing as i decide when it changes. thats a thought for the future.
it doesn't change into overdrive till 65/70 but wont change down until about 40 so i often turn O/D off when going through rounda bouts to get up the hill on the other side.
allot of it is probably to do with my driving mood. im not a hoon but give it a fair kick along at times.
so i cant decide weather to change oil and filters and see what happens or just drive it to destruction then pay $100 for a manual box and everything else for the conversion from the wreckers.
what are your thoughts?
thanks

when was the last service on the auto... oil and filter change ?
next OD should be off until above 70 km/h
if its a TP power should be on below 70 km/h
could be a faulty tps ..that can be adjusted or replaced
check the timing on the engine
the tcu and box seems to be working fine by your diagnosis

it hasnt been to a garage for 2 years and ive never done it in that time. before that it was only patch and go fixes anyway so ide say its been a while. the box was a factory reco fitted ay 73,000km and ive traveled about 215,000 so its only 140,000 old.
i will see how much i can stretch the budget to change oil and filters because as you say the box seems to be in good condition. the fluid is clear and fresh.only thing is ide like to convert to a manual so ide rather soend that money on another box but the wreckers dosnt have many old magnas at the moment (they just crushed 23 od them the other week :(

Before you touch the box, check the TPS. Symptoms sound very much like the tps is kaktus.

do you have qa procedure mate? ive done a quick search and looked in my manual but i only have the manuals for the tm and tr so everything efi wise is a little different and the procedures dont fit seeing as its a different throttle body.
thanks allot

Nope, I looked under the bonnet of a fuel injected first gen once, and went "WTF, looks nothing like the TS throttle body setup!", so unless someone with the right manual can help, I'm of no use. Sorry!:eek2:

well it seems that my 'hard driving' (holding it in 2nd to get up hills, the occasional fast take off) are taking their tole on the poor old auto. it slips between changes up noticeably when its warm, not so much when its cold (not to say it doesn't i just haven't noticed it).
ive now got a complete 2nd gen auto box, motor, tcu ect ect that i pulled out this week end but would rather leave this one in while its working and to be honest don't even know if the cv's / mounts will fit of the first gen.
so im wondering weather it could be oil and filter that's causing the trouble as they haven't been done in many years or weather its more likely ive chewed the shit out of the bands / clutches?
any comments appreciated.

hmm sorry i should prob start a new thread..... but ive got the first gen box in my tp at the moment and its presenting these slipping issues all of a sudden. first time it did it was from 3rd to overdrive at about 85ks when i was accelerating out of a roundabout on country highway. it was very noticeable because i lost all power for about 3 seconds then it SLAMED into overdrive. i was accelerating fairly hard but not too bad.
now about 2 weeks later its doing it once or twice every time i drive it. it makes a whining noise when its slipping then jams into gear all through the gear range, namely 1st to 2nd tho.
i should mention the first gen box was rebuilt at 70 thousand and its just done 211,000 now, and fluid is crystal clear even though it hasnt been changed in 2 years +.
seeing as i wrecked a second gen this weekend ive got a clean 2nd gen box to put in when i do the motor that seemed to shift smooth as silk but had dirty fluid. it was installed in the other car about 20 thousand ago by a wreckers that was a friend of the owner so i assume its in decent nick.
firstly are the splines on the shafts and mounts the same? i know plugs and connector's are different but i kept the whole front loom and tcu.
thanka allot,
regards jay
