Hi Guys
Another problem, got given the white TR a week ago, and was running good, until yesterday. Its cops a bit of a hard time to be honest and it had a very slow gearbox leak. Now it lost all its transmission fluid and as soon as i fill it up it comes out near the cv shafts, where the look like they go into the tansmission. Is it the CV's or something worse?
Cheers
Chris

Where the CV shafts enter the gearbox there are oil seals. Pull the offending shaft out, and replace the oil seal, check the shaft where it sits in the seal for damage. Might fix the problem.
Check the driveshaft for play where it enters the gearbox before you pull it out, there should be no up or down or sideways play, if there is, the differential may be broken and allowing the shaft to move around inside the seal, letting the fluid out.

Thanks for the rely,
Unfortunately today when i was driving it it carked it :( Down the main and a loud crunching noise appeared and that was it, now i have P R N D 2 and L all as neutrals. Any ideas on how much and how hard it is to change the differential? I would really like to see the odometer hit 300,000 km, its 600 ks shy atm.

You drove it with such a massive leak? Did you bother to try locate the problem? Get another gearbox from a wreckers. and chance that it is good, or pull yours out and have it reconditioned, but be prepared for a big bill.

You dont need to change the diff, you need to change the complete trans, sounds like you have fried your transmission pump. Is a shame for a pair of leaking drive shaft seals you let this happen, have now gone from a 100 buck repair to having a car you may as well just throw out

Sorry if i seemed like it was massive, the leak was bad, but i could still be inbetween the empty and full on the dipstick. if i filled it anymore it would pour out the bottom.
The Reason for driving was to see what a mechanic would say, too late for that i guess....
Would a stufed transmission have the same symptoms? When i put in in drive it still has all gears, the speedo works it just doesnt seem to be transferring the power to the wheels?
And Yes guys, i have learnt from this believe it or not. Will not be flogging any more cars around believe it or not.

Busted diff or stripped axle splines. Pull it apart and have a look.
