View Full Version : Wheels and tyres, KJ ---> TJ

Just bought a set of 5 KJ alloys + wheel nuts off Shagna to go on my TJ at some stage, at a very reasonable price today - thanks buddy, your car sounds good - and have a couple of questions:
Buckled wheel - one rim is bent in on the inside edge, no cracks visible, is it possible to get it rolled/straightened whatever, who can do this in Adelaide and how much? (not really viable if its expensive, as the standard steel wheels have a rolling circumference only 2.5% less, a steel wheel will do as a spare.)
Tyres - what is a good price to pay for the middle of the road tyre, 215 X 60 X 16", along the lines of Bridgestone and Goodyear. Interested more in long life and quiet ride, rather than stability at white knuckle speed. lol I will probably need 4 of them, so price is a big thing.
Cleaning - Filthy, filthy, filthy! Started to clean them with a sponge and detergent, ended up using 800 wet and dry on the inside surface. Any good cleaning methods out there?
Despite my complaints, I'm impressed by the deal, should look good cleaned up and with new rubber. I have been looking at wheels, but was put off with the tramlining and wheel alignment problems some people have with dumped suspension and bigger low profile tyres. Going to the KJ alloys, only 1" bigger and 10 mm wider should preserve the handling and stability of the standard setup.

I put some 16" rada rims on my TE. If anything the tramlining was less. As to tyres, I use Nexen CP661's. I love them. They are quite grippy, quite and seem to be ok on wear. Gotta pump em up though - 40 psi on the front.

Got a price for those? The current tyres on the rims are a mixture of Dunlop and Yokohama, all pretty much past it, so I'm free to choose, no brand/model matching needed. lol

Take the rim into Extensive Wheel Service (http://www.hotfrog.com.au/Companies/Extensive-Wheel-Services)s South Rd, Mile End. They've got a good rep and do a good job. I've used them myself.
Expect to pay over $100 for the job but if they can fix it, it'll be done properly.
If it where my car I'd fit Kuhmo KU31's. Jack Baker TyrePower on Sir Donald Bradman Dr does the Kuhmo's for a good price.
Cleaning? I haven't found anything that needed more than hot soapy water?? If it's grease/tar spray it with kero.
Maybe try one of those spray on alloy wheel cleaners you can get from SuperCheap etc.

Don't worry, I'm making a list of brands and will be making some phone calls to get $$$ quotes. lol
Bridgestone er30 is on the list.
Nexen CP661
Yokohamas
Kuhmo KU31
Got no prices so far though. lol Looking to stay on the cheap side of $150.

Around $100/wheel sounds familiar.

Nexen at $103 each sounds good to me!
got my pirelli's p7's for about $160 a tyre. good tyres in the dry and wet, very quiet tyres too. bought them 12 months ago and still got probably more than 65% tread on the front (haven't rotated the tyres and have done a bit over 10,000kms), this includes some spirited driving

Got my Dunlop Sport SP300E's last year for just under $160. They're quiet, grippy and are wearing well. Based on my experience, I would stay away from the Savva brand.

Bridgstone ER300 is the new ER30. The Er300's are great. Very quiet, grip well and last well. I got 60,000 out of my AWD in the ER300's.

Yokohama C Drive is an excellent tyre - grip and handling to rival Continentals and high end Michelins at a much lower price.
Might not last as long though, but thats the choice you make - longevity vs. grip. Tricky to have both.

OK, I will check out the prices of Yokie C's and ER300 next week. I have 2 of the alloys with barely legal Yokahama A drives on the front of my TS wagon - just to try them - and the steering is heavier but more accurate, feels good.

I had a pair of these tyres on steel rims on my soarer when i had it and they were awesome tyres. They gripped better in the wet and dry than my much wider 17" wheels with cheaper tyres on them and i just wished i could get them in a 17" size.

I had the Nexen CP661's on my 17" VRX wheels and they improved the hanlding 100% over my old stock wheels.
Currently got the Kumho 31's on my 18's and they have dramatically better grip in the wet, but less in the dry

Went for the cheapest tyres I could find - yes, I'm a cheapskate! lol
Bridgestone (?) Dayton 215 X 60, 16". $104 each. Currently on the TS wagon, 36 psi. Only got two for the front, in case they turn out to be crap. lol I will move them to the TJ exec once its registered and these tyres turn out to be reasonable - tyre placard doesn't mention them, only the 15" 205 X 65, and I can't be bothered getting the tyre placard for the KJ. Bob Jane also has a tyre at that price, must be the cheapest deal in Adelaide at the moment.

Idiot,
For very little more you would have been able to buy Kumhos.
Sorry for the rudeness, just don't buy cheap tyres. Buy good tyres cheaply.
If they are Chinese or another Asian yumcha brand you may as well take your brake pads out and go for a fang!

Now that is the response I was expecting!
It's an experiment, they seem ok around town at the moment.
Kuhmo is not my favourite brand anyway.
They are on the TS at the moment, lifts the appearance of the old banger a bit, but the rims are far too damaged to go on the TJ, so on the TS they stay. The TS 3.0 auto wagon is not a "fang" type of car anyway.
If these tyres turn out to be unsafe or have poor wet weather performance, I will put the full set of Bridgestone RE92s back on.
Maybe if I can get my hands on a better set of alloy wheels for the TJ I will drop Bridgestone ER300s on them at $150 a pop. Time will tell.
Don't like Asian tyres? Read this!
"The Kumho Tire company has several factories around the world. There are four factories in China, three in Korea, one in Vietnam and one in the United States. The factory in the United States is located in Georgia."
Dayton tyres are made by Firestone in Thailand. lol I will let you know if they delaminate, disintegrate or wear out quick. lol

For wheel cleaning I bought some PWC (Power wheel cleaner) off the Final inspection (http://www.finalinspection.com.au/)website, and it even got my white wheels clean with little to no effort and you can buy it in bulk ;) I think his online store is out of action atm though.

To get an idea what other people use, whats available, what prices look like. Why else?
