Hey all it's been a while since I had a play with car audio, but its time for a new system. Went into my local car audio store and got some ideas and prices, yes, it's all alpine, but I'm getting it cheap anyway. Just wondering what experiences people have had with this gear in the past, or if its all crap and i should start all over.
Head unit: CDE-103EBT.
4ch amp: PDX-4.100 or MRP F300.
Front speakers: R series 6" splits.
Rear speakers: 6x9 R or S series. Probably have these faded nearly all the way out anyway.
Subwoofer: Here's another question, do I go one 12" Type R, or two 10"? I'm after tight, punchy bass, I listen mainly to rock and metal.
Mono amp: Yes it's discontinued, but I've got a damn good price because of it, V12 mrd-m1005.

If it's all crap let me know. I know some people don't like it but I prefer Alpine gear, as does my mate who has been an audio installer for 27 years. Just asking for some non biased opinions, thanks guys!

EDIT: All up I've been quoted close to $2.5k if I go Type R 6x9s and PDX-4.100. Is that a decent price? I believe it's a bit below retail, and I can probably get it lower again.

i would ditch the front alpine splits and the alpine sub.

Any ideas on what to replace them with then?

Soundstream are pretty damn good, but there is definitely nothing wrong with Alpine.

Yeah I've never had a problem with type r stuff. I thought it was pretty cheap as well considering its from Smythies.

Personally I really dont mind the Type-R splits, this is coming from a sound quality judges standpoint. they arent the ducks nuts or anything, but they exceed what I would expect when tuned correctly.

Cant comment on the price as I dont have time to think about it, but either the F300 or the PDX would be good, but the PDX would be much more sexual :) and the 1005 is a top amp for sure!

Mate i don't think your local audio retailer is looking after you with that price! I just looked at the alpine 2011 summer catalogue & you can get all Type-r 6.5 splits, 6.5 coaxials, pdx-5 amp & 12" sub for $1499 or could get the $999 pack with type-r 6.5 splits, 6.5 coaxials & pdx-4.100 amp & go with a different sub brand like JL Audio, Crescendo, Focal, etc

IMO that headunit is abit limiting with only 2 preouts I would look to go to up to something with 3 preouts like the cda-105ei or look at the Eclipse 5030

I do recommend you go & have read of few posts at http://www.caraudioaustralia.com.au/forums as there alot alpine system threads in the beginner section which will help you out.
