so,

working on getting the 1998 tf back onto the road that i picked up for bugger all and i noticed the on the auto shifter lights on the cluster that it lights on in all the gears except for drive. now im wondering what could cause this and im also liking the idea of changing the bulbs that light it up to blue bulbs.

so im wondering while im attacking it trying to find out how to get a blue bulb in there is there anything i could look into to make it so it also lights up on drive or is it not meant to? tired, and got some welding spit in my eyes today at work so excuse as always my crappy spelling

Yeah , a replacement bulb. Out of all of them D would be lit the most so no suprise first to blow. Might be worth replacing the other main ones like P,R,N or swap them with the L, 2 globes as these would not normally get a lot of use.

Sure enough you'll do the D and one of the others will go.

The bulbs that illuminate the gear inidcators in the cluster are a specialised type, and around the $20- mark from spare parts according to posts in here a yr or two back.

They have a tiny bulb at the end of a long (3-4cm) narrow plastic bit, and the base is designed to "twist-in" and lock on the printed circuit at the back of the cluster.

By far the easiest thing is to use the "1" bulb in the Drive position, since you will almost never manually select Low gear and need a dash indicator to tell you this!
I have several spares of these bulbs from Wrecker-raids, so could drop one off at some stage (I don't live in Sydney, but Tamworth - try to get to Sydney every now and then).

THe green colour of those Indicators is due the the "mask" in the front of the cluster, so changing the colour to anything else would not be straightforward.

Or order them from the states @ $2.75 each! That's $19.25 for 7 + postage. I'm sure at the size they are they'd fit in a small padded envelope which would not cost more than $10 I'd say. How much do the wreckers want for them? You'll probaly burn $10 worth of fuel just going there.

The above information is for part number MB849560

Yeah, that's a good deal. A lot have minimum purchase prices and my local wrecker has good stock but pricey and nott real helpful when it comes to fiddly globes in behind the dash. And then would not let me test them.
