i have a 2000 th magna sports. i know the oil rating to use is 5w-30 but i was wondering what the best brand is to use. i accidently picked up some 10w-40 and put that in my car and its now blowing smoke signals above 2500 rpm so i need to change it again pretty soon. just wanted opinions on the best to use. ive heard castrol magnatec is good.

Penrite HPR10 is very highly regarded around these parts

quick forums search would have given you many many posts about this

Quick search would yeild many results but while here

If you are getting smoke with 10w40, unless yo have a very cheap and nasty oil in there, you have real problems

In the range of semi synth, Penrite list the HPR10
In the range of full synth (what i use in my car and some of my customers) Syn5

i searched several times and it came up with nothing. search thing playing up maybe? hmmm not sounding good about the problems :(

A good synthetic or semi-synthetic around 5W-40 to 10W-50.
Personally I use Penrite HPR5 5W-40 or Pennzoil Platinum 5W-40

Magnatec is a mineral based oil. That alone doesn't explain the smoke. How many kms has it done and what's it's service history like?

218,400ish. admittedly the service history isnt great, hence why i changed the oil. im thinking it may need a service. it sucks when you go to sort out one thing then an uglier thing rears its head

I am thinking may be an oil issue, give the engine a good flush with either nulon or wynns, idle the car with the flush for a good 20mins, then drain when hot without burning yourself and then drop some HPR10 in it and give that a go

I remember there was a similar thread a while ago (AWD forum) i believe Magnatec was the oil used once again & the car had smoke blowing. To be honest i dont trust the whole magnatec technology. I know im only guessing here, but picture this, if it sticks so well to the engine internals even when cold! wouldnt that in turn cause the problem since it does not flush away when you switch of the engine? So you got limited oil circulation, so wouldnt you have an old film of oil covering your internals. I know its a lot more complex then that but still & bet i will get 50 responses saying people used magnatec for years without any problems. Its just my opinion people!!

Try Penrite cant go wrong, proven oil of good quality.

Hmm, the other day I picked up some magnatec from Repco to try, it was $25 with a free Repco oil filter.

I haven't put it in yet but I was going to put it in my 95 4cyl EFI TS, I know it is a bit thinner than I should be using but I also figured that the worst it would do is just run down a bit quicker, but could it actually do any damage?

Thanks

Currently running Shell Helix Ultra - 5w-40 - fully synthetic. Its an improvement over the Heavier, mineral based, Penrite oil I had run previously. Not leaking as much around the front banks camshasft end cap.

Planning to switch to Penrite Syn5 as per Madmagnas advice. Mostly because I think the Penrite oil is a much better product, but also because I hadnt had access to Syn5 until recently.

Cant stress enough the importance of running the correct weight oil in your engine, to heavy an oil can do as much damage as too light an oil. Also, if you're going to shop around for an alternative oil, check the API standards of the oils. The stuff I read about mineral vs' synthetic tells me the synthetic is less likely to break down under tougher conditions.

Mineral oils will tend to absorb some moisture, there is a surprising amount in the crank case due to combustion

Add this moisture to the sulphur which is a by product of combustion, you end up wht H2SO4, ie Sulphiric acid, what is inside your battery, is not real good for most of your engines internals

Full Syn will not absorb moisture, this will appear to be dropping levels over time as the oil will be sprayed on teh bores, a smear is left behind. The mineral oil burnt will be replaced with the moisture in a normal not worn engine, the full syn will tend to drop a little

Also, ever taken the rocker cover off an engeine run on full syn all its life, I did one the other day, the rockers were still shiny and new, the rocker cover gaskets etc were still soft, something in that me thinks lol

Have been using Magnatec since 15000km and have just done 120000km. Service every 7500 km or six months ( which ever comes first), never had a problem.

But in your case surely engine flush and try different oil.

I use castrol edge 5-30w fully synthetic, great price and get better fuel economy as opposed to 10-40w .

Well, did oil and filter change today, put magnatec in my TS, no smoke so far, car is running smooth, expecting oil will no doubt run down a bit quicker than usual tho

If there is smoke then he most certainly has an oil control issue ie worn rings, or valve seat/stem seal wear. a good flush may fix, or cause more leaks!

just a quick update. the cars not blowing smoke any more. its fixed itself for now. i think the fact that it was a little over full may have something to do with it.

Magnatec's own advertising says it magnetically attaches itself to the cylinders, which is bs. Depending on the oil chemistry, it may electrostatically attach itself the engine's internals, but as said above interrupting the oil cycle is the last thing you want to do.

I used magnatec once and never will again. Granted it was on my skyline, someone suggested I do a flush with a cheap oil for 1000kms. I changed at 800km, the noise was gross and it seemed like it hated reving. Threw in some left over nulon and all was well again.

It is true that a lighter oil will be more petrol efficient, but it is very marginal. Back to back dyno tests show no conclusive results as to power differences outside of the dyno error. Running a light oil may end up costing more in repairs if you have really high kms. By far the biggest influence on fuel consumption is the driver.

I havent seen motul oils recommended on these forums, is it just a price issue or something else?

I've used Motul 8100 X-cess 5w40. It's good stuff, engine certainly liked it. That was before it went up to $75 a bottle :(
Changed to Penrite HPR 5 and now Penrite SIN since I put the blower on.
