try using the key with the remote a long way away from the car so you can conclude whether the remote is sending off unlocking signals or something, i dunno.

Well it could be something physical stuck in the locking mechanism so the car unlocks again because of pressure? i don't know if it has this function but its a thought, otherwise it must be something giving the signal to unlock again, confusing, i think ill leave this one to the experts haha.

There is a feature that won't allow the car to lock with the key in the ignition, maybe that's stuck ??? or the drivers central locking unit might have worn electrical contacts internally.

Actually for all I know that key feature might be via the transponder and not the physical insertion? Someone else can answer that one.

Get inside your car and try locking the car from the inside on both passenger and drivers side, if either of them feel like you need to force the lock, then the mechanism for that is stuck and will need to be unjammed.
Otherwise yeah it could be the key in the ignition feature playing up, there should be a relay/fuse for that possibly that you can disable temporarily.

Switch on the ignition barrel is most likely the issue here

How did you end up getting this fixed?

Spray some contact cleaner (you buy this stuff at Dicky Smiths or Jaycar) into the ignition barrel. Work the key, then spray the stuff again. When spraying, you'll need to gently push the lock shield aside using a mini screwdriver from one of those $2 sets of microscrewdrivers. Also use the little plastic pipe extension which comes with the spray can. This will concentrate the burst of cleaner into the barrel.
