Hey everyone,
I know there is probably a million posts on here about CAI's so im sorry.
But im having no luck on finding much in the way of a guide or similar, and especially nothing AWD oriented in this dept..
I have a K&N Panel which is a massive improvement from stock but, still not quite enough.
Im looking at making up my own CAI similar to the RPW system.
I want to completely remove the stock intake and re-position it behind the front bumper.
Any tips or suggestions on how to go about this would be great.
Also im running LPG (stupid mixer ring) and am wondering if there are any special considerations i will have to take into account as a result?
Any help would be great :)

I believe Razor had a RPW CAI that he was told would fit his AWD but did not due to the dimensions of the AWD gearbox. (in addition to RPW short changing him a pipe\join)
In addition to this, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, but you want the LPG mixer ring as close to the inlet manifold as possible to maintain a good mixture.

Hi hobit,
As nemesis said i got the RPW CAI and (i am not turning this into a bashing thread, just stating a fact) I only received one straight length of piping so the kit was never going to really go where i thought it was going to.
Further more the positioning and size of the Tranny/Gearbox meant that the piping could not go straight down to the ground as it would on a FWD.
I am more than happy to meet up with you some time if you wanna go over with someone.
Weekly meet on Wednesday?

Yeah thats correct, the mixer ring wont be moved its still going to be right next to the inlet manifold, im planning on extending the CAI from this point..

Im hoping to get along to a meet in the very near future, unfortunately other commitments (girlfriend and work) arent really giving me much time to do so :(
Do you have any photos of your system?
What was the power and induction note difference, assuming it was noticeable?
Thanks :D

The induction noice was instantly noticable and i very much liked it. Had a more... defined... sound.
Power and responcivness seemed better and now i have removed the system seems sluggish. This could be placebo and could also be due to a few other issues with my car that will soon be fixed. Once i have the problem solved i will be reinvestigating returning the Pod to the car... just for the induction noise if nothing else.
If you search the forum, there were some threads with pictures of CAIs on various cars, including some how-to guides.
I checked them out a while ago and some of the guys here have gone to extremes to get cold air into their engine. I was very impressed.
If those threads survived the forum database failures a while back, they would help you a lot I think.
Cheers, Graham.
(Oh, and welcome to AMC and AWD ownership if I didn't say that earlier).
Have you by chance looked at a dyno comparison of RPW CAI vs Stock CAI?
Dyno results show a minor loss in low-down torque (slightly moving the powerband upwards) - This is not ideal for a AWD, so it really is sound vs power in this instance.

86_Elite has a guide to doing this for the FWD, cost ended up being the same as the RPW kit:

Also note he later hydro locked his engine due to CAI and put a huge crack through the block:

Given you have a TL you could look into the Factory NZ CAI option. I've fitted one of these to my car and it's made a notable difference to midrange pickup and the top end. Rev's out a lot smoother to the 6800RPM limiter than it used to, which has reduced the surge shifting from those RPM's massively. Can't complain about the intake noise either, didn't make a heck of a difference, but it does sound a little beefier and gives an ever so slight whistle on lift at high RPM on occasion.

Hmm after reading about how he blew the engine, a CAI mounted soo low may not be the go..
My car is more or less sitting on its arse already and the idea of possibly getting water into my engine and the ensuing problems really doesnt appeal to my wallet =p
Other option is to re-locate the battery and make up a CAI that way...
May have some playing around to do on my next day off..
Thanks for the advice mate =]

Any idea how i would go about getting one? Might be worth a crack before I go re-arranging my entire engine bay with aspirations of minor power gain lol

The NZ CAI would be the way to go as they take air from behind the LH grill.
There is a little piece of plastic that needs removing behind the grill, but that is a 2 min job.
Put a WTB thread up, there might be someone here who has one.
Or you can order from NZ Mitsubishi I believe, something like $130pp? I think.
No need to have the NZ CAI. Just do what I did. See here (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69540&p=1081014&viewfull=1#post1081014).

Agree with Vlad...thats the way to do it...here's my version of similar method...http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=39577&d=1240920829http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/album.php?albumid=9&attachmentid=39576
Vlad, I don't really see the objective of what you've done. I mean sure it's drawing from behind the grille now, but you're still sucking in hot air from above the radiator. I can see some improvement there of course, but it'd be more effective IMO if you ditched the factory over-radiator intake, like GTVi's. My only concern with his is its not a factory fit item and doesn't really look like it is either (albeit very tidy), and I like things that look/are factory fit :)

Shoot me a PM. I've got one that I can sell you. Can supply a battery tray that's been trimmed down to suit, too- will save you carving up your own.

Before doing the mod, I monitored the intake temperature at the opening of the stock snorkle last summer and it was quite good. It only heats up while stationary but rapidly cools down once on the move. The problem with the stock snorkle is that it is also quite restrictive. Thus I've added an additional air intake that also takes cold air.

I think im gunna head in the same direction as GTVi's CAI for now..
Looks neat and the concept would be quite effective..
Anyway its gunna be cheap to =D lol
I might still be interested but ill let you know after some weekend tinkering :)
Thanks anyway
