View Full Version : Blown a hose - would really appreciate some help!

Hey guys,

I blew a hose on my late generation Magna the other day - I'm pretty sure it was a vacuum hose from the aircon unit as it was pressurised and it was only water in it. Is there any way I can tell for sure that I'm right?
I've found the location of the hose, it's about 5 inches long and it looks to be coming from the bulkhead. There's a unit above it (don't know what it is, but I'm assuming compression/vacuum unit) that looks like there is room for a hose but the hose below it is nowhere near long enough (unless there was an extension that also blew off that I didn't see). My description isn't the best so I can post a pic if that would be useful?

Any help would be appreciated...I need to get to work tomorrow!

Thanks!

At a guess I'd say it isn't aircon related, probably a heater hose. Best way to identify it is to describe what symptoms are apparent - like no coolant or overheated. Could also be the vacuum hose to the brake booster but there shouldn't be water in it. If it was aircon related you would still be able to drive the car. A pix would be great.

Hey guys,

. . . . a vacuum hose from the aircon unit as it was pressurised and it was only water in it.

It's probably a good idea to stick your head under the bonnet more often and work out what all the bits are called and what they do, so you can work out if you have a problem or not when things go wrong.

sounds like you are describing the air con drain hose. Throw up some pics for sure!

Thanks for the replies!

Checked all basic fluid levels and I can't see anything dropping, and I haven't driven since it happened so not sure if the car is overheating (the hose blew literally as I was pulling up to my house)

I've attached a pic with the hoses highlighted (one at the bottom is the one that was leaking water, and the one at the top is where I assume it broke free from)

I would love to learn more about what's going on under the bonnet! A haynes manual would be a good start but I can't seem to find one for the late model magnas. Any ideas where I might get one? (Tried supercheap etc)

Darkside, that is the evaporative fuel collection cannister!

The bottom hose in your picture should look like that, its a drain pipe. Nothing wrong with it.

Mmmm Just looked at my TJ, totally different. Posting pic up in a minute . . . . . What car you got?

If you haven't got a TJ then I can't help you. but may I suggest that you look under the car for any dangley bits of hose that should be connected there? lol

I'm such an amateur! What does it do? Also, how can I fix it (or would I best getting a mechanic to sort it out?)

Thanks for the help Max!

Here is the link to the official workshop manual (free)...it's the best available:

It collects vapours from the fuel tank and feeds it into the engine when it is running. You may have lost some bits, possibly. What car you got? Go to the wreckers and have a look at how it is set up in the same model, then grab any missing bits and fix it yourself. A mechanic would probably need to do the same thing anyway.

If you told us what model you have, someone with the same model may be able to chime in. The more info you supply the more accurate any answers will be.

Mine looks exactly like that, it's normal
I have a KL

Hi Grelise,

Are you sure it's normal? It was pushing out a lot of fluid and it made a loud hissing sound immediately beforehand. I'd estimate it lost at least a litre. Having said that, the pipe doesn't feel like it's perished or even rough at all (doesn't feel as though it broke) Perhaps something internal went wrong?

Is the fluid water? The thing handles petrol fumes! Maybe you have water in the fuel tank? lol Parked it in any deep water lately? lol

The heater hoses are close by. Have a look at them. A busted hose can spray water all over the place.

Mines looked like that since I've had the car. Had it nearly 5 yrs now.

Yeah, grelise wouldn't kid you mate, unlike some people on this forum. He is usually straight in his answers.

A busted hose can spray water all over the place.
Feel under the hoses for wetness.
If the fluid from that part of the car is greenish water, it has to be a coolant hose that went.

(I can feel a "D'OH" moment coming up.)

OK, I've taken some pics of mine, could be the 2 lines over the canister that are leaking,

http://i316.photobucket.com/albums/mm329/grelise1/DSCF2246.jpg

Those 2lines over the top of the canister are the fuel lines, the one on the left, no idea, trying to find out.
Did the liquid smell like fuel?

Ok, found that the hose to the left is the hose to the heater core, there will be one more below that for the same thing.

Just had a look at all the surrounding hoses, no splits or evidence of leaks that I can find. The coolant level doesn't seem to be down either, and the water was clear when I saw it with no smell that I could detect. There's also no discernible residue from the leak which again points to water.

When the hose was leaking it was like a tap, it wasn't spraying (at least not by the time I'd gotten out of the car and looked underneath) but judging by the sound it made when the hose went, it was definitely under pressure.

I'm having a mechanic come and look at it in the next 15 mins so I'll keep you updated! Thanks for all the help and pics so far!

Did you have the air con running, cause the water may be from that
