Hey there!
No, this is in fact not a "What exhaust should I buy" "Nah, just buy a VRX rear muffler" thread.
I'm keen to learn about how to get the best sounding exhaust note. Don't care about noise levels, don't care if I loose power. This is about sheer aural pleasure.

Four very different exhaust set ups, four very different sounds. First = Redback catback AFAIK. Second = NFI. Third = 2.5inch mandrel bent mild steel with two small resonators at the tips. Four = 2.5??? Stainless steel straight through with one cannon muffler on the tip.
My question is, I want a magna that does not have a deep note, but does not have an overly raspy note. I come from the import community where everyone buys 3 inch stainless steel mandrel bent with 2 hotdogs somewhere in between. These exhausts generally hang so low they hit the ground very often, and are rather unsightly. That said, they also sound fantastic!
Does anyone have any tips, theorys, experience on exhaust note tuning?
Cheers guys!

My faviourite exhaust so far (as of sunday) was Tjtime's, Think he said its a redback catback with a magnaflow muffler, I thought it sounded amazing partly due to the volume which im 99.9% sure is fairly illegal.
All those exahaust sounds there sound pritty shit the second one is the best

2nd one is best. Also, can someone point me in the direction of the refreshments? I'm really only in here for the tea and biscuits...
Edit: Can you believe they don't have any biscuits?

I've had lots of positive comments on how mine sounds, it has a nice growl to it and when it's on song, it's not to loud. A friend of mine has a skyline and he prefers the sound of mine compared to his.
I'll try and get a decent vid of what it sounds like tomorrow.

click them, they sound good, but I think its also a lot to do with the cams.
Sixuals exhaust sounds brilliant, much better than the disappointing Lukey that I ended up with which is nowhere near as good as my last Lukey,

Yea sixual's my old TE, it did (well still does) sound good but could get a bit raspy at times, the muffler on my VR-X atm sounds a lot better imo, i've gotta chuck a video up but it's a lot deeper and under load sounds amazing...

Haha hells yeah, the extractors change the sound of the exhaust heaps. I had my extractors fitted before a catback, and it made a huge difference in sound, it even burbled on the stock sports catback.
I have the 2 1/2 inch mandrel bent redback catback with a magna flow muffler. Everything is straight through, and yes, I'm sure its quite illegal. It will be even deeper when i get my cat and pre-cat done!
I actually love IH8HSV's exhaust, so loud, so racy! His exhaust tone just screams from idle and the tone it puts out makes me cream my pants.

Im thinking of getting this setup but an easily unbolted/re-bolted muffler so i can swap to my big redback muffler whenever im not feeling like a hoon, because my car's auto the magnaflow muffler would drone way to much! It would drone at idle!!

To be honest. I don't mind this set up, Probably could use a more sophisticated exhaust set up But damn dude, lay off the limiter hahaha. Can you tell me some details on this exhaust set up?
And, for those of you who don't already know, the refreshment table is over by the window. Yeah, over there. Help yourself.

Its easy for me to bolt/unbolt my rear muffler. DIY in maybe 10-15 mins? There's only 3 bolts holding the flanges together.
And when my car was auto, it never droned on idle, raped your ears at 80, and quietened down somewhat at 100. When you take off, you make so much noise because of the auto, in manual it sounds epic! Convert to manual!!! lol

Hay mate. I like people to hear the whole rev range sound. This is the full stock exhaust system. WIth the rear muffler removed and replaced with straight pipe i like the simple straight pipe look. This setup is not to loud perfect sound. If u wont to now details on other exahaust sounds i have on there ask me cause there all different setups
Of course we generally all like our own, and I'm no different.
Here's one that sounds just like mine sounds.

Magnaflow mufflers sound good imo. They have no drone nor are they to loud, they are just right. They sound like a NA V6 should, sharp and sporty. Mine reminds a lot of people of early M3's and Porsches sound.

found another one thats light on the throttal, what i liked about it was that it wasnt to loud normal driveing, but as soon as you flogged it it sounded like a weapon. i used to get alot of kids asking me if it was turbo when they would see me beat my friends xr6 in a race,(it had 188rwkw out of a NA) private property of course ;)

As far as I've seen it depends on a variety of mods including what Cams you have as well as what you've done to your exhaust.
keeping it simple, i've heard of lots of good reports on rear mufflers such as Redback & Lukey sounding great but more favorable comments seem to come from Magnaflow.
Anyone know what the Varex (adjustable style) mufflers sound like?
Also, continuing the sound tuning side of things, what do the different bits such as hotdogs, resonators, etc. do to the sound ?
ie. Is there a recipe for tuning an exhaust. Such as if you want it deeper, add a XXX. If you want more back-off burble, add a XXX, etc ?
oh, and that's a nice tasting coffee, but we seem to need more biscuits.
Sounds fat matt green. Sounds very similar on my GF car just not quite the same cause she dosent have extractors.

Varex muffler's when open seem to be a little raspy, i think this is due to the air having both the middle hole open and the redirecting route open at once, turned me off the varex mufflers, great concept however.

what do you mean by different? more raspy? louder? deeper? cheers

I recall Chisholm replaced the Magnaflow on his Sports with a Varex. He said the Magnaflow was definitely better sounding.

same as above. i found mercury mufflers sounded sweet as! ditched my redback in the begining.
i used to get so many compliments about it it sounded like a weapon, i miss it :woot:
Opening up the air intake also effects exhaust sound - with the snorkel off my air box, the exhaust is significantly louder than with it on.
So I always have it off.
Mine is stock AWD (which includes a T intersection into the single pipe instead of a Y join like FWD, no snorkel on the air intake and a lukey LR2779 (2279?) with a twin square tail pipe - the tail pipe is rolled, but not all the way over and the turbulence caused by this also adds an interesting sound at high RPM and engine load.

mine is a straight through system with no hotdog just a muffler and a dump pipe on the end. cant remember name of the muffler. but had a few comments about the depth. its on around the second page on here

Its sounds the same just yours sounds abit more angrier. Matts system on his car was pacemaker extractors stock cat. Then a 2.5inch mandrel bent catback. With a round muffler type resonator not a hotdog and a mercury straight through design muffler at the back sounds fantastic.

Jamie (Stormie) has a full stainless exhaust including heat treated headers with twin varex's at the rear with basically straight through pipe on his 380, chec MMX Day 1 thread for the 380 dragging it down the road and you will hear how loud and raspy it is with stainless. IMO, for what it is, I reckon it sounds great but its pretty much a "race" setup so it sounds horrible when you chuck the car into "D" and drive around but when it hits from 4,500 > limiter, sounds so so angry.
And yes, Manuals seems to sound better than Auto magnas IMO.
