Hi guys, posted this elsewhere but didn't get much feedback so maybe someone else can help me out.

I want to buy a TF -TJ magna preferably with LPG/duel fuel but read somewhere that Mitsubishi Motors advised against using 3.0 V6 engines with gas.

Is this true and should I avoid them - what's the problem?

But the 3.5 engines are OK for LPG aren't they?

Is there any reason not to get a Magna with LPG?

Thanks

No reason at all.

I've had 5 different Magna's on LPG so far & the only issue that I've had with any of them has been the fault of the fitter/tuner.

Altera & Advance models actually got LPG approved engines anyway- others may have also but I don't know which ones.

You mean Altera + Advance 3.0 or 3.5?

Or both?

Have a look at the engine bay, it will have LPG stamp on it, ill post photo tomorrow night. I had LPG on my car for a while, first i had traditional mixer system, it was fine but i didn’t like the fact i lost power even when driving on petrol, so i upgraded to vapour injected & its simply great not a single issue so far. There is nothing wrong with mixer system as long as you don’t mind loosing little bit of power, but mind you that power loss is only noticeable at the high revs, during day to day driving you cant notice the difference.
My car done over 150,000ks on LPG & still going strong.

Can some confirm which models came with lpg stamp on the engine?

AFAIK all Altera LS's & all Advances. Someone may correct me abot the Altera's. (Was it all Altera's or just the Altera LS?) The 3.5l Advance engines were all LPG compatable.

The LPG stamp is on the heads - can't remember exactly where but it's definitely there!!

Its at the front corner of the head, nearest the LH head light, on a liitle tab, right next to where the head meets the rocker cover.
I only new about the Advance model LPG compatibility.

Or is just below that on the block????
Anyway, mine doesn't have it.

If I damaged the heads, Its time for 380 ones! :)

It's definitely on the heads, not the block.

my TJ1 exec has an lpg engine, as stated the heads are stamped "LPG", and the option plate is stamped "N01"

Honestly you wont damage your heads with LPG, plenty of non lpg magna engines driving around for a long time. If you are really concerned with valve lubrication then invest $100 into flashlube kit & thats it.

According to the LPG installer who's done five of my cars, in the TE and TF series the Advance, Altera and Altera LS had the 3.0l LPG compatible engine as standard and this engine was available as an option on the Exective. He believes the LPG engine had different valves and harder valve seats. That said, he's converted TE and TF Magnas that don't have the LPG engine. He says he's not aware of any problems with the heads on these engines due to the LPG.

As an alternative to the Flashlube system, I use an upper cylinder lubricant which is added to the petrol tank.

Great help thanks.
And what about fuel consumption figures, city and country?

Okay city driving on mixer system got me about 450-470max from 70 litres, on straight higway e.g from Sydney to Melbourne (when Sydney FC played Victory in the final) i got 595 ks out of the tank with 3 people in the car.

With injector system im getting stable 490ks-500ks in the city , didnt get a chance to test it hight way yet.
My advice get either system depending on your budget you wont regret it, my next car will definately also be dual fuel.

OK thanks a lot.
Anyone else got some consumption figures they want to share?

I was getting 9 -9.5 ltrs per 100km highway cycle from a factory dedicated gas (Impco mixer system) TW ES sedan.

Cheers

Mixer system: 350kms per 50l tank - mainly highway driving. (14l/100km)
Injected system: 580-620kms per 60l tank - mainly highway driving. (10l/100km)

Both are for 3.5l 4sp auto FWD.

Mixer system 14l/100km highway driving (average), 20l/100km stop-start city driving (average).

These figures are for a 3.5l 5sp auto FWD Verada.

320km/46lt (14.4l/100) in the city (40km/h av.)
400km/46lt (11.5l/100) highway
im sure i could improve on those figures but i am a spirited driver

TF Altera 3.0L about 180,000 since LPG fitted (dual fuel), no issues except a flat spot in second that I've all but given up trying to get fixed.

14l/100km town and 10l/100 on highway. TW 3.5/4 speed auto.
BRC Sequential Vapour Injection.

With an average cost of 62 cpl over the last 450 Litres, the fuel costs $8.80 per 100 Km.
Thats round town, work, school run, very little highway work there. Driving tippy style :)

Done about 60,000 k's with the system now.

So thats $5200 in fuel using those stats. ( most of that was actually with gas around 50-55 cpl, that a lesser amount of $500-$750, so lets say $4700.00)

So if the petrol costs are average $1.20 and the car used 12l/100, that 7200 litres of fuel @ $1.20 a litre = $8640.00.

And the system cost me 2000 after the rebate, so $8640 (predicted fuel) - $4700 (actual fuel) - $2000.00 install cost after rebate leaves a positive of $1,940.00 and counting.

Man that was boring, but I did want to work that out anyway.

If the car was stolen lol or written off it would have been pointless. But as it stands, shes done 108,000k's and shes gonna do a hell of a lot more.

So on city cycle 12l/100 petrol and 14/l/100 gas ( at today fuel prices ) I save $7.50 every 100 k's, or by the time I my TW has done 200,000, that a further saving of $6,750.00. Or $750.00 between every 10k service interval.

TF Altera LS 3.0L that I had, was not the gas compliant engine. It did however end up on gas.
