View Full Version : tj clutch removal
Hi all. I have a blown engine sitting on the floor of my shed with a bellhousing and gearbox attatched. Ive got all the bellhousing bolts out and it just wont pull out because the bellhousing is hitting the bellhousing. Im very tempted to use an angle grinder. Is there a way? Any help would be muchly appreciated. Thanks guys

The bell housing is part of the gear box, you need to remove the bolts from the box to the engine, prior to doing this you will need to release the clutch release, there are threads about this but the search is crap so best off just down loading the workshop manual from AMC and then using that for a guide
ok it said to use two screwdrivers and twist them? no go. no way in hell that will get it out? tried it for an hour

push the clutch forks forwards as far as u can go by hand then put the screw driver in the top hole and twist left or right and it should pop off. took me a day or too until madmagna told me this and within 2 seconds it was off lol

Go on an aftermarket clutch site.
The trick is to have 2 screwdrivers, one from the top, the other from the bottom.
Insert behind the clutch release bearing and twist.

trick si to shine in with a torch, you wil see the bearing you have to slot basically in between the bearing and hte wave washer.. i found it helps to put the screwdriver in, then push the clutch fork in so it compresses, then spin it.

Please dont push inbetween the bearing and wave spring, that will jam it more
You also dont need to use the top hole, in all these years I have only ever used one screwdriver with no issues
If you look in, you will see the wave spring, then towards the fork a flat washer/retainer and then the cluch fork, put the driver in between the retainer and the clutch fork, push the arm so the wave spring is compressed and then twist, when you release the fork will go all the way back the other way
