View Full Version : Oil leak
Hi all I have read two other threads similar.
I have an oil leak on the passenger side of the engine. This is a 4 cylinder.
It is so hard to tell where it's coming from its sprayed everywhere.
Just recently had valve stem seals done so it shouldn't be coming from the rocket cover.
The oil pump looks petty wet.
I suppose the best thing to do is to clean the side of the motor up and then try and track it down.
That side of the motor looks so hard to get at to work on.
Any input with working on this side of the engine will be appreciated.
Thanks........

Probably a cam seal.
Is that next or just below the rocket cover???

Below the rocker cover, under the front timing cover, not real sure on asstrons how the timing cover comes off to expose the cam gear, but incorrect installation would result in it pissing out oil everywhere
Also, tis "rocker cover" not "rocket"

possible places
the half moon at the rocker cover
the 4 cyl also likes to leak at the harmonic balancer seal
if that balancer gets soaked in oil the rubber ring weakens'
and likes to pop off the drive belts

Yep. The Astron is no rocket. lol
They can also leak at the head gasket where the block meets the timing cover.

Have you done work on that side of the motor?????
It looks like you need a trained mouse to get down there.:eek2:
Thanks for the reply. That seal popping out sounds scary

you need to undo all the engine mounts
so the engine can tilt
eneough to get the harmonic balancer off
its a $20 seal but look out for a sharp ridge on the balancer where the seal runs

Hi magna buff thanks for the help.
Have you had to ever use a speedy sleeve???,,as I thought I would get a price from a mechanical workshop. One place wants $60 which I thought sounds GOOD. Another place wanted $250.
I asked about the procedure and the $250 place said unless you sleeve it it will leak again.
The $60 place said YES it can happen but I can't remember the last time I had to sleeve one. They seem to think it's pretty rare.
I hate that rear engine mount. I replaced the trans and when I had it out I should have replaced it then, but I did it after. I have replaced all mounts bar the gear box one. ( Just got sick of spending money ).
I don't like the idea of having to undo all the mounts. Well I guess you would undo the bracket that comes off the block ( for the rear mount that is ) I guess I also have too get a puller for that pulley,, So for $60 I think I'll take that.

yes i have seen the sleeve it slips over the worn harmonic balancer shaft'''
and gives the seal a smooth surface to run on
a new balancer is $200 plus
the harmonic balancer is on a key way doesnt need a puller just slips off
on a TR/TS 4 cyl
you have to tilt the motor down till the balancer clears the chassis
as you said not much room to work on that passenger side
trick is getting the crankshaft bolt off
$250 for the proper job sounds about right

Is That bolt a PRICK to get off??????
What about,, if my balancer is worn and I go to upullit to get another one,,or does it have to match the motor or something stupid like that???
Thanks......................

any balancer will do as long as it isnt oil soaked
or have a sharp edge where the seal runs
yes that crank bolt can be tight

I have read a post that was answered by madmagna he pointed out about using the starter motor to undo the bolt.
I have brought a speedy sleeve just in case. CDB said as long as I don't use it they will give me cash back.
Now I have not ever seen a pulley from a TR when it has been pulled off .
So when you say as long as it's not oil soaked is it that the pulley has some sort of rubber centre that can be affected by the oil?????
When Mitsy’s gave me a quote they talked about possibly having to sleeve it, but they didn’t talk about the pulley being oil soaked.
I know firsthand that oil does breakdown rubber.
Thanks
Well I've done it.
I undone the passenger side engine mount,,then took out the through bolt in the front roll stop.
Lowered the motor down, and then loosened off the front cross member. ( this is the one that is right up the front of the car, the one that the front roll stop sits on.)
After doing all that, and just a bit of a pull down with one hand it was clear.
After I cleaned up the balancer shaft there was a very small ridge. I didn't want to take any chances of it leaking so I put that speedy sleeve on it.
All looks good.
Thanks for every ones in put:dancin::dancin::dancin::dancin:
