View Full Version : TW: how to change plugs?

TW, 71k on the clock, runs a bit rough on a slight uphill at 65kph in 4th, smooth on down-changing. It's dual fuel but the same on gas or petrol.

Q1: am I correct in thinking plugs and leads?
Q2: if so, where is a good "how to" guide, and what do I need, apart from plugs?
Q3: any recommendations re leads?

Mits leads are actually very good quality so doubt that is the issue, especially on a TW with only 71k's on it

For the cost of leads, you may as well use genuine if you really have to chagne them

I would be checking the front bank plugs, fuel filter etc before starting on other parts, all too often people cry cap, button and leads and all too often these items are not the issue

I dont mean to interrupt, there are some Top Gun leads on ebay for around $80 do you think these be better than factory? or either way.

those leads are marked 96-99, do they fit a TW?

huh?

there was no 2.4ltr engine in the 3rd gens, they only came in 3.0 and 3.5

While slighty off topic, yes there is 2.4l 3rd gens. Went as far as the TF I believe.

Top Gun are ok but for the effort needed I would go the Genuine ones.

Why skimp on a mere 30 or so bucks and for that matter, dont just go changing leads because of a hunch, there are still many TE's out there with original leads, unless you test yours and find an issue, move on

Didn't mean those exact ones. Was just asking if top gun leads were better than mitsi brand.

LPG will tend to highlight any faults in the ignition system, and a fault in the ignition generally means good potential for backfiring on a mixer type LPG setup. Make sure plugs with correct gaps are used, and don't neglect to check the dist cap. Is it an actual misfire when under load?

I'm not sure that it would be the leads. If there was a fault with the leads you would have some serious misfiring going on. I think maybe the quality of the spark plugs might need checking, and also the air filter. And even the fuel filter as Madmagna has said.

The TE-TF's did come in a 2.4 litre 4 cylinder model aswell so don't go buying the wrong leads out of haste to try and fix it. The car isn't going to break down, so just do some simple investigation into the issue and try a few things and you'll save a bit of money in the process.

Now, do you have your car serviced regularly? Are these normal things checked is what I'm trying to get to.

If the car performs the same on gas as it does petrol, its highly unlikely to be a fuel filter or fuel pressure problem.

it doesn't misfire, it is just a bit rough. It is serviced regularly, last done about 8000k ago.

The problem with changing plugs, as someone suggested, is that it is not a trivial job. in fact, it looks quite involved to me.

Its actually easier than it looks.. there's not a whole lot holding the upper plenum onto the runners. You remove just enough components to swing the plenum up and prop it with a block of wood or similar. No need to disconnect wiring or hoses to throttle body or throttle cable. For a novice, probably 20mins to lift the plenum, and a further 30-40 mins to change plugs and refit plenum.
