View Full Version : TL Magna LPG Overheating maybe?

Not sure if this is normal for the Magna. Its a TL Factory LPG... Temp Gauge gets to halfway quickly and stays there as it should... But when idling for awhile it will go over half way by 2 notches or a bit less then the fan kicks in and it goes back down to half way.
Do other peoples do this or do you think it might be my thermostat has a problem / coolant not circulating properly etc?

I'm happy to say that sounds absolutely normal to me.

yeah mate as long as it returns below halfway its fine. The problem would lie if it sat above halfway for too long, couldn't kill the radiator in worst case scenario.

I am sitting in my TW, idling away, and the needle hasn't moved above the halfway notch at all. Even after 20 mins, never has.
I wonder if there is correct procedure to refilling a radiator, Anyone?

I'm wondering if the thermo-fan switch is a bit slow. I have TJ and haven't ever seen the temp gauge read any higher than half way - regardless of how badly I treat the engine or how long I let it sit and idle for.
I'd be cleaning up all the electrical connections in that area. Its a simple, and free, thing to try first.

My TJ is dual fuel and runs the same Impco system as the dedicated LPG TW. My temp gauge sits just under half way no matter how long the engine idles. I'd check the coolant level as well as the electrical connections.

No its not normal, your fan is not turning on when it should, you temp gauge should never go past half way. matter of fact i had the same issue. In my case it was poor installtion by gas fitter, it prevented from fan turning on when it should, i installed new system & the problem went away. Okay there is few causes.
LPG system needs heat from coolant in order to turn liquid LPG into vapour, well not exacly it needs hot coolant to prevent freezeing over (since liquid gas will turn into vapour even without heat), soooo ECU might be letting it heat to much before activating the fan, have someone to hook up to your ecu & check.
Your sending unit which sends temperature reading to ECU might be mulfunctioning, again run diagnostic before replacing, from memory they are about $180
Lastly your fan relays, simply go & buy a new one & repace it (cheapest thing to do)
Hope this helps, keep us updated.
PS if it starts heating up again simply switch on your AC this will force the fan to switch on (i was doing that for over a year)

it's only two or three degrees.
I wouldn't worry about it.

cool... I might try the fan relays ... I changed the coolant recently and levels are fine. I have a friend with a dedicated LPG TW and his has never gone above half. You're right though.. its definitely electrical as the fan just seems late to kick in.

I own a TL dedicated gas, I never had that problem. I will say your cooling fan is not on or the fan thermo-switch is not working or set properly. Get it check out. It does very good mileage by the way.

I had the same issue with my KJ, found the sender unit was false reading.
Replaced the sender and thermostat (or good measure) at the same time, now temp reading is rock solid.

i know we took my sisters astra to the mechanics as the needle was moving up and down on halfway (when the fan was kicking in, it was slowly going up to half then down and kept doing it) and he said its just a few degrees its no stress.

The problem is it shouldnt be doing it, yea its fine if its just couple of degrees, in my case it normally wouldnt go up more then two nothes BUT once when i wasnt paying attention & next i looked at my dash it went all the way to the red line, lucky i noticed in time & turned on my AC (to make the fans work) otherwise bye bye engine.........

Engine cooling is responsible for over 90% of motor breakdowns, and lead to, more often than not, the most expensive repairs, so, a 'she'll be right attitude' doesn't quite cut it for advice.
Fix it.
