View Full Version : What to get
Hi,
Sorry but I didnt know where to post this.
But just wondering Im thinking of getting a magna, what sort of magna can I get for 5G (in Perth)??
How can I tell if a magna is a V6 or a 4 cylinder car?
And how many Kms can the magna travel before you have to replace the engine etc?
Thanks for your help.

Okay $5,000 is kind of a hard figure to work with because it's worth more than the usual V6 TR/TS but isn't enough to get you a TE. I would probably try to up it to around $6500 and get myself a
3L TE Magna Executive with Manual Trans. 3L TE Exec Prices (http://www.redbook.com.au/Vehiclesearch/price.asp?key=MITS96HA&veh=y)
TE Advance - What I would love to have, ABS, Drivers aribag etc (http://www.redbook.com.au/vehiclesearch/price.asp?key=MITS96JK)
This is worth $5,000 - TS V6 Si (http://www.redbook.com.au/vehiclesearch/price.asp?key=MITS95IQ)
These days the prices of 3rd gens are coming down and I saw a 2001 TJ Exec sell for $10,000 a few weeks ago at an auctions with nothing wrong with it. I would try to pickup a TE Exec for $6,000 but would be prepared to pay say $6,500 for one. As far as $5,000 goes like I said it's hard to deal with, your best bet is a 1995 TS V6 Si I think but for an extra $1,000 or $1,500 you could pickup the latest shape Magna which looks better, drives better and faster and is just a better build inside and out.
As far as whether it's a V6 or 4 cylinder, the most reliable way is to pop the bonnet and have a look at the engine. Alternatively a quick yet less reliable way would be to check the rear end and see if what badge it has. If it's a TR/TS GLX means 4cylinder carby, Executive means 4 cylinder, Executive with V6 on the left hand side means V6 and so on. However people often debadge and re-badge their cars so this could be misleading. Another option is to of course drive the thing or rev it whilst stationary. This should be enough to realise what it is. If you go here (http://www.redbook.com.au/vehiclesearch/valuations3.asp?make=MITS&family=MAGNA) you can have a look at prices for Magnas depending on the year and average kms for that year and what not. If you want to know specifications, photos, and general information along with engine capacity and power etc go here (http://www.carsales.com.au/pls/carsales/!cs_content.research_results?price_min=&price_max=&category_id=5&search_type=21&make_name=MITSUBISHI&model_name=MAGNA&selected_model=34&year_min=&year_max=&cs_trans_id=&keyword=&BODY_NAME=&drive_id=&door_num=&seat_num=&engine_low=&engine_high=) and just click on next page or whichever number you want for the older Magnas. I always find this is the best way for checking the amount of cylinders on cars.
Locate the distributor (its the thing with all the big cables coming out ;)) count how many cables it has coming out of it, if its a 4 cylinder car, it will have 5, 1 coming from the coil and 1 for each cylinder. if its a V6, it will have 7, again, one for the coil and one for each cylinder.
Hope this helps :)
What is better though, a V6 or a 4 cylinder magna?

Well, depends on your needs.
A 4 cylinder is going to be more fuel economical, but wont go as hard or as fast as a 6 cylinder, but a 6 cylinder will use more fuel.
I would personally have a 6 cylinder for the power reason, i have a 4 cylinder 2.6 and its as gutless as all hell, cant even spin the wheels

thats not true. The 2.6 have alot of boot in them, jsut don't get an auto
in my 2.6 i can quite easily bag up the front wheels in the wet and the dry. they're not that bad on the power
99kw standard i think

yer there rather powerfull if u get them in the manauls, i love my 2.6. But ive driving 2.6's in Auto and they can be rather slagish
and the 4 cyl wot be more fuel econ, that was one of the 2.6 downfalls ull find the V6 is more fuel efficent

HAHA no probs mate
yer if you compare the 3l to the 2.6 ull find its about the same maybe more to the 2.6 arr have having a 2.6 i know how much it guzzles
remeber the TR/TS's are a little heavier than the TM/N/P's so the 6 will probably be more efficient, however the V6 Second gens prolly feeel the same as a 4cyl first gen, due to power to weight ratios and all.
Id definitely get the 6, but prolly not till a 92 - 93 model, i dont like getting cars (in this case, the 6cyl engine) within the first year of production, give them a year to work out the bugs.

NEVER go an auto if u have plans to make the car fast, with the excaption of mild cubed turbo's eg; 300zx auto
Im just looking for a car that will go down south without a hitch (other than filling up the car on the way home. might get a deeper sounding exhust and a mp3 tuner (for the long drives)

hmm 6 would be better for cruizing but for anywhere other than up here in the stick (townsville) there are good enough highways that a 4 in a big car is more than ample. get the 4cyl 3rd gen body
