Hi
Just trying to work out the differences between the factory standard head unit (and system) and the premium sound option.
Did they use different speakers? higher wattage head deck? 4-6 speaker system?
I'm playing with the idea of repalcing my standard system for the premium option. At this stage I want ot keep the car as Mits as possible.
The Premium setup is a 10 speaker (8 speakers really) system that consists of a 3 way system up front (woofers in doors, midrange in dash, tweeters in door pods) and 2-Way 6x9"s in the rear. They are more powerful speakers than standard, as is the headunit, and for stock it's very good, but still nothing on a proper aftermarket setup.

Look, this may comfirmation, but does the premuim unit have a little more Oooomph, while the single din output about 10 watt, I thought the premium had about 15-18 watts, But it was really the extra speakers up the front that made the difference,
The Premium H/U will get 1/3 of the way there, I say 1/3 because, the ES(exec) single din with the lower wattage would sound better with the premium speakers, than the premium H/U with the ES (exec) speakers.

Can you reword this? It's kinda confusing (to me at least anyway). From my experience putting the Premium deck into a car with the standard speakers still sounds noticeably better than the stock standard single din, but not quite to the level of the premium speakers and deck matched together.

If you liked the std look of the premium system, would it not be possible just to run the whole lot through a four channel amp to get better sound, plus, having already put in better 6 x 9 ,sub and splits in the front..??

Yeah you got it, Premuin deck and stock speakers = good, but stock deck and premium speakers would be better, And all premium would be Best.
So speakers are highest priority, deck second.
But Maggie is on the money, Get the Premium H/U, Use a four channel amp to run upgraded front splits and a sub bridged off the the last 2 channels.
If it was me, I wouldn't upgrade the 6x9's, as the best sound you'll get is with splits and a sub running, with the fader set all the way to the front.
But as you want stock, MitsFix in the sponsor forum will probably have premium speakers in stock ready for you.

Cheers mate,As my head unit doesnt play the radio atm ,i am looking at several options and quite like the stock look of the premium head unit,,,yes, atm ,i have upgraded speakers (splits ) in the front, sub, and better rears.....they are allll there,so its just a matter of getting another head unit.
Can l, or how do i ,run the four speakers and the sub....I have a two and four channel amp available...
and does the premium head unit play mp3's,more importantly..

Before deciding on how many amps to run, get out and listen to few systems in magna's, some prefer Front splits and Sub's, and some want all four plus the sub, I would jump in a car with the latter 4channel +1 woofer, then wind the fader forward, and see how it sounds.
Try a few cars out, I have the same splits in two different cars and they sound very different, partially because of the car, partially because of the placement.
This might add a week or two waiting before you upgrade, but it will help by not redoing, adding or running thicker wires, and saving you time, money and bootspace.
And the TL/TW premium unit should be MP3 compatible, as the ES version is.
The funny thing is, the better sound gear you get, the more dislike for MP3 you will have, Distortion comes in earlier with MP3. Even more so with weak links like, Factory head units, and High to low level converters.

Default Re: re head unit
Well you are definately on right track, You may have a feature on the four channel, sub out, one rca from the 4 channel to the 2 chan.
If you run a splits and sub combo ( no rears) The rear speaker power should be able to be trimmed on the 2 channel amp using the low level crossover, filtering all the signal above, say 80Hz.
This also would be an easy option.
There would no issue using the high low level converters, on the amp/s, or say aerpro ones, at the same time off the speaker cabling. to do rears and subs.
And I wouldn't cut the loom, so mush as tap into it, just in case you need to return to stock later on.
Or I found This.

A quick call to the importer would confirm my thoughts that it will give you contrllable 5 channel outputs from limited High level inputs.

Easy to get hi level to low lever RCA converter and run into a processor or a 5 channel amp and go from there :)

My old man upgraded the speakers in his F6X a little while back with some Alpine gear (Type X splits front, Type R rear, Type S sub, all professionally installed). He kept the factory headunit and amplifier (came standard with "premium sound"). It sounded good, but far from great.
Last week, he had the factory stereo completely bypassed, by adding an Alpine headunit and PDX amp. Same speakers of course. What a difference it made! The stereo has come "alive" now. I was surprised at the difference - I was expecting it to be a subtle improvement, but it turned out to be massive.
Considering how easy it is to replace a headunit in a Magna, and the fact that an aftermarket headunit wouldn't be that much more expensive than the premium sound + line converter, I'd be going straight for something aftermarket...

Apart from OP's wish to stay stock, Red is totally on the money.
Keep your Head deck in a box in a garage for old times sake.
