Hey guys,
My TJ VR-X got broken into last night...pricks smashed the front passenger and have ripped the entire centre console storage unit out (no doubt too carry all the stuff).
Thankfully I didn't lose much...just a 4yr old GPS (about $300) and about $50.00 give or take in coins...
Just chasing recommendations to get the window repaired...
Windscreens O'brien have quoted me $438 which is a better option than insurances $500 excess + bad rating, anyone know of anywhere else in Western Suburbs of Vic who could do it slightly cheaper?
Additionally if anyone has a spare centre console storage insert could you let me know...saves me running around the wreckers...
Also should the car alarm go off from broken glass? I tested the car today with the alarm and it would go off if I opened the door?

Give Mal a call or a PM, he's probably got all you need at his place. And cheaper than O'Brien's as well. Bastards like this should be shot.

Yeah was thinking of calling Mal but it takes me over an hour to get over to him, but if it's gonna save me a shitload might be worth the drive

I've always wondered if a double layer of tint would stop this sort of thing. Thoughts?
I'd be pissed if it was mine, though. The problem here is that the damage is right in that hole between being too cheap to use insurance and too expensive to not be angry about.

Sorry to hear man.... yes damn factory alarm unfortunately does not have window shudder sensors or any other impact detection sensors. Only works if they actually open the door, boot or bonnet…. Hey at least they didnt rip the guts out of your aircon console to get the stereo out, so could have been worse....

Yeah have already reported it too the po po, she said the crime unit might come down and take prints (as it didn't rain here last night).
But eh...I'm just taping up some old beer slabs for now in case in does rain today.
No one else in my street looks to have been hit as well.
Ahhh ok that'd explain why the alarm wouldnt have gone off, wish the pricks had opened the door so I could of caught them.
Looks like they either got distrubed or something as there were a few money notes (from within the console) laying on the seat, some perscription drugs also got taken..no doubt junkies.
I've lived in West Footscray for over a decade and never had anything like this happen before so it's extremely disapointing!

yeah the car alarm not going off is a pain.
my one has (i dont have it fully installed after the manual conversion) a motion sensor, but in high winds it can be a pain as it will set it off with a bit of a rock, but its handy to have for those kinds of entries or leaning in and out

Stay away from Windup O'Brian. They wanted $450 for a front windscreen, local guys came out and did it for $250. Door glass is easy to replace, get one from a wreckers. Pulling one out of a wrecked car will show you how easy it is.
Yes, the wreckers will have the window glass if you can't get to Mal's easily. Jolly's; Door Glass front, $28... And it wouldn't take long to strip the door down, clean out and replace.
I'd come give you a hand, but have 9 x 10 year old girls in the house at the moment (actually, maybe I should come!!!).

Stay away from Windup O'Brian.
Agreed! O'Brian are a joke!
I highly recommend "Novus" I recently got a windscreen put into the Caprice after a truck flicked a rock up.
O'Brian wanted $390 and a 2 day wait, Novus charged $180 same day service and the guy even changed our wiper blades free of charge. And the quality is fantastic!
I have the number of the guy who changed ours if you want.... very good to deal with
Lives around the corner from me too (Kensington)

Problem is being a side window and being the saftey glass a lot of the locals I have spoken too don't have it in stock.
Well I've just booked RACV, I don't have time to get to the wreckers nor do I the tools. $413 I can live with as I need the car avaliable due to work commitments arrggh what a pain in the ass!
Thanks for everyone's input!

G'day I'm new here.
Have a 1996 Executive V6....think its a TE (although the rego says TS) windows aren't frameless if that helps ID??
I'm hoping someone can help me out with some info ASAP
I just had some scumbag do the same to my window last night - frikking junkie kids. Passenger side window is shattered but still in place so at least the rain isn't getting in.
I can't see through it to drive well though.
Can anyone give me a rundown on how to replace it myself if I can find one at the wreckers (price of O'Briens or anyone else to do it is way out of my range)??

I had the same thing happen to me at work in Sunshine. Had to park my car around the back of the building for some stupid reason and there are no cameras there.
Buggers smashed the passenger window and pinched my new iPod out of the glove box and a ton of church change.
I'm just glad they didn't take the stereo - that would have pissed me off more than anything.
I got home and called RACV. After a lengthy wait - AND I MEAN LENGTHY - the girl on the other end said they would replace it that night for free (i pay the window cover - my windscreen has a nasty scratch from where a rock got caught under the wiper).

just make sure they didnt pry out ur window otherwise ur door might be damaged. my window got broken too, and i think the door seal is ****ed now, and the window is unable to sit properly. (ive had heaps of people try to fix it)
and as a result, the passenger side carpet in the foot well seems to be damp sometimes. maybe i should just replace the whole door...

Although O'Briens may be a little bit more expensive at least you get a nationwide, lifetime guarentee so if something goes wrong or your car gets damaged during the install, you are 100% covered whether in Melbourne, Perth or the Simpson Desert !!
Yes, others are cheaper but what happens when it's raining, your 400kms from home and your window no longer goes up and down or your windscreen starts leaking because you cut corners and used "Dodgy Bob" on the corner because he is cheaper ? Or if "Dodgy Bob" scratches your car or damages your window regulator while installing, is he going to pay to fix it ?
Just think about it that's all.
Yep. I got my windscreen done at a cheap windscreen place for $220, little bits of glass left everywhere in the dash, footwells, gutter under the leaf guards, some even got in the engine bay, big dark dirty hand prints all over my light grey fuzzy pillar covers, rear view mirror stuck back on-but not in the centre. Have to adjust it all the way to the left so I can use my sun visors otherwise they hit it =\

Hey man, if you can change a tyre, you can replace a window. It's pretty easy....! Save yourself the cash and grab one from pick a part or something? $50....
P.S what side of town are you on

Can one of you guys who say its so easy to replace a side window yourself write up some instructions for someone who hasn't done it before so that I can do it easily once I find a window at the wreckers?
