View Full Version : Piggyback tune & cold start fuel richness

Excuse the silly question, but just wondering if it's worth playing with my ChipTorque Xede tune to reduce the cold start richness a bit.

I've noticed that the cold start auto choke is a real fuel economy killer.

From a cold start (and especially in winter) I get around 12.3 litres/100km after 100k or so of city & suburban driving, but once warm I get 10.5 litres/100km or better around town.

So could someone like Steve Knight (who fitted & tuned my Xede) adjust the auto choke AFRs or not?

And if so, is it safe to do so?

Or do the cold start AFR's need to be very rich to ensure decent cold running and to protect the engine?

I wouldn't worry about AFR's on a NA engine.
The amount of money it will cost you for even an hour with him will take a long, long time to make up with the economy gain that you "might" get.

Put it on LPG if you want it to sing.

Yeah, probably not worth the cost of a retune, and I'm not all that worried about fuel economy, just wondering from a tech POV whether it's something that can/can't should/shouldn't be adjusted via the piggyback, or is it tightly controlled by the stock ECU.

It has to be rich for a reason. When i lean out the TR on cold start you an feel the car start to cough and splutter. it has to be one to keep the car running like normal at low temp's.

And I dont think anyone has unlocked the cold start map on magna ECU's let alone 380's.
