Hey guys!

Looking at joining the Magna family again!

Im looking at purchasing a 2001 Series One TJ VR-X from penrith. The car is white, and has 125,000km's on the clock. Over all the body seems to be in pritty good condition. There is a scratch on the passenger front fender and paint missing from the front bar. (obviously from bottoming out on driveways.. Pritty common from my experience with VR-X's).

The only thing that is bugging me is a creaking noise from the drivers door. It could be from a lack of grease, but Im worried its something worse, like the door not alighning correctly, IE accidient.

The only reason im thinking its that, is my first magna, had a similar noise because it had damaged hinges from an accident (but thats why I got it so cheap!)..

Thoughts guys?

Anyone want to help me out and check it out??? (as Im from newy..)

Thanks!

AFAIK creaking doors are common on 3rd gens.

My TE started doing it on both front doors at around 100,000k.

Mitsu service dept bloke reckoned it's just normal wear & tear.

Mainly the 'detent' bar/lever.

Cheapest easiest fix I found was motorcycle chain lube (in a pressure can). Just spray on/in/around the door hinges and the detent bar.

Not too much though or it will run all over the place.

Didn't get rid of the creak completely, but cut the noise down to only a faint creak.

A bit of grease on the top and bottom surface of the slider will fix that. As long as the door sits level with the fender and rear door and the gaps are even around the door you have nothing to worry about. I'd be more concerned about drive shaft and steering rack boots as well as coolant and oil condition in both engine and gear box on a 10 year old car.

Also check for water marks and mud in the wrong places, there will be some flood damaged cars on the market if not now, soonish. Worth a check.

Thanks guys.

The car it self was in really good nick. You could tell the guy had garaged it the whole time he had it. I was just worrying about the door, as my VR-X had 160,000kms on it when I sold it and it had no door creaking. I did sell it around 2007 - 2008 though and it was only 5-6 years old.

Did a REVS check and it all seems too work out..

My vrx started doing it after I got it back from the smash repairers as they didn't align the guard up properly after I took it back for the second time. I'd check the door and guard to see if they have been taken off for repairs

Its a common issue. My has started doing it but some grease on the door strap and it went away. You buying a daily.? Still got EVO.?

I have had creaking noises from the front doors couple of times now. Spraying WD40 has fixed it all up. I would not worry too much about it.

Good to hear its a common issue..

Yeah Jason, still got the Evo. The Magna is actually for the missus to drive around.

Its going to be nothing special, just an auto VR-X. Might put a stezza in it and lower it or something. :-) Just want a clean reliable car, thats good for long trips.

Mine does that all the time, too lazy to WD40 or Grease it.

When you take it for a drive, if the Autos playing up, check the tranny fluid level before making assumptions. Mine was a pig before i filled it up with good quality fluid.

Get a transmission oil cooler + remote oil filter kit from Mits-Fix and give it a propper service!

If it has service records check that the timing belt has been done. If no service record, look for stickers on the cam belt cover and ask the current owner about it.

Does it have the TJ Sports 16" rims or the VR-X 17" rims. Because the early series 1 had the 16's, the later series 1's had the 17's.

Its a series 1 TJ. So it comes with the stock 16" wheels. As soon as rubber is gone, Ill be swapping them out for some Evo rims, or 18's.

Go 18s.

Best compromise between looks, comfort and tyre cost.

Aaahhhh, we will see.. I cant seem to find any good looking 18's.. besides, If I get evo 17's, the offset will allow them to fit over brembos.. ;)
