View Full Version : No oil supply
Hay all
Last night i was driving around and after driving for abit i noticed the oil light was on and the car sounded like a tractor the oil was full but i was like wtf. It hasnt gone away and i rang my mechanic he said it was an oil pump failure. Im not shore if this happened after i accidently dropped the car into 2nd gear at 140km the revs went quickly to 10rpm then down to normal but i didnt notice anything after but it happened shortly after.?

That can't be good for the engine. You 'd better get someone to look at it.

Thank you captain obvious...... glad to see we are all on the ball here
Now to state the even more obvious, tow it to a workshop and get the oil pressure tested, the issue could be something simple as a cheap aftermarket oil filter having crapped itself or could be more serious like the oil pump or a spun bearing. The over rev, while if only for an instant, should not really have done that sort of damage, perhaps a stretched rod etc woudl be expected. Could be there was an isuse there already and this has just brought it to light sooner
Only way to tell if you have a sender issue however is a pressure test

$10 says your pump gears have crapped themselves and yeah, def an oil pump, also, how did you stick it into 2nd gear at 140KM/H??????? there is a big difference in the position of 2nd and 4th....

That's not a good thing mate.
Get it towed to the workshop and have them check it out. Seriously, don't start it anymore until it's been checked over.
To late guys my babys died today i thought id try getting to the mechanics witch was just up the road and the started making some metal slapping sounds and died so sad to see this engine go like this she was so tough and got me a good time at willowbank lol. My mechanic reckons oil pump but ive never heard of oil pumps going on magna engines

Really? magna engines usually don't get downgeared to 2nd gear at 140km/h.
your oil pump gears are toast. Seen this happen time and time again on 3000GT 3L engines that are overrevved for short periods of time.
3.5L upgrade time now :d

Yeah true i dont know how i did the 2nd gear thing. So u think its because of the big over rev that caused the oil pump failure? Wat u mean by over revved like after the rev limiter?

Probably a big end bearing gone or a piston damaged or seized. Probably cheaper to get another engine.

Ahhh yep. At those RPM's I've seen some horrible pictures of oil pump gears shattered. they make billet oil pump gears for high RPM applications like yours lol
What RPM's did the engine go to when you downgeared at that speed?

Oh ok. I dont wont to embarrasse myslef lol. well it went to 9rpm for a couple seconds then normal again. It might of went higher cause thats the last rpm on magnas

Yep, that'll shatter something internally.
Well, good excuse for a 6G74 upgrade. with a nice cam profile added, she'll rev just as long, just wont rev as QUICK as the more nimble 3L.

I would say pump at very least mate, I have seen this on a few occasions, rememebr the rotors in teh pump are only cast and can crack.
If you have starved the engine of oil, is best a throw away item, I do have several very low mileage TL/W engines down here, even with freight will be far cheaper to replace than it is to rebuild, unless of course you are looking to do a decent build etc

Got a 3.5l with 70km on it and 380 cams going in next week. Yeah i love the way the 3.0l revs

Drop a 380 flywheel on the back with a good 380 clutch, will help a little with the Rev's as the flywheel is lighter

Oh ok wats the cost on a 380 flywheel and clutch? I might consider this as a future mod
