hi guys,
I was having a swim at a popular Sydney beach when some low life diceides to steal my keys and phone.
Long story short, it was the one and only key I have for the car and the car is parked in an $5.60 per hour parking bay.
I managed to get into the car without the keys and remove the ignition barrel but i couldn't start the car.
It turns over but will not fire.
I've pushed it down the street (with some help from the locals) to a non paying spot but my car is stuck on the side of the road. :(
Is there anyway of starting my verada or do i need to get it towed to the dealership and be charged a small fortune. :eek2:
I have red lights and she turns over but she just wont fire. It's a 1998 model verada.
Regards
Chris.

Its the immobiliser stopping it.
You need a key.
tow it to a dealer.

Thanks for the speedy responce.
Is there anyway to buy a key and program it myself on the side of the road.
When i bought the car it didnt have the keyless entry remote so i bought my own from the dealer and programed it myself.
Can i do this with the key or does it need to be towed? I imagine the key programing would be striaght forward?
Thanks
Regards
Chris.

The key needs to be program to the immobilizer system using a mut tool. So it going to need to be towed to a dealership :(

By what i've seen in Transformers Megan Fox can hotwire it, and you can have a good perve at the same time.
Unfortunately it needs to go to a dealer.

Car needs to be towed to a dealer. Dealer needs to order the key in, pre cut to your vehicle VIN number. Key programming needs the MUTT device, nothing like programming a remote.
Shame on you for only having one key, its asking for trouble. It's going to cost you more now.

Yeah it's my fault for owning the car for the last 7 years and only having one key.
Guess what im doing for my merc that only has one key tommorow....
Im not going to bother replacing the barrel unless i have to, the car can't be started without the key anyway, so the barrel isn't important.
Hopefully i can get away with just a new key and the tow.
Thanks for the responces guys, your a helpful bunch!
Cheers
Chris.

What concerns me is how you got the ignition out as if you have damaged the ignition the new key will be useless to you.
IF you have damaged your ignition may be, depending on model, be best to get a new key, barrel, ecu and bem, if no damage you will need as above to go to a dealer, order key (need proof of ownership) and get programmed, being a lost key they can do urgent order for this as well

i would go back to the car and disconect the key barrel immobiliser ring if i were you. this will stop the theif from stealing the car if they work out it is yours as it will not start without it. even if they have the key. then just organis a tow to mitsubishi.

Can you bypass the immobiliser like you can on after market ones?

Simply answer no :)

Wouldn't be much of an immobiliser if it could be bypassed. lol Sparky says the simple answer is "no", and he is a genius at electrical car things, so the answer really is "no".

you can bypass, but ECU needs to be unlocked i.e untied from BEM module
MadMax

BUT he has no keys at all, reprogramming the ECU to ignore the immob still requires you have at least one key.

my other half isnt bothering to get a spare for the Rada , i'm going to show her this post to convince her she needs one. approx how much is it for another key from Mitsu using a VIN / ownership papers ? I think our local locksmith had a cloning tool and charges $130 for key only.

I need to organise a spare one too, maybe we can do a group buy lol

If you have a local locksmith who can supply and clone a key, that's the way to go. Got a chipped 2nd key for a Lancer a while back, lots of stuffing around travelling between dealer and finding a locksmith willing to cut the key, then back to the dealer. It was more than $130 IIRC.

Ahh okay, so its better than the aftermarket ones (largely because they're often shoddily installed lol)

i rang Mitsu yesterday , $170 for a new coded key to our VIN plus cutting , they reckon $230 all up. i know that they have to make some money on parts but seems a bit much. on this site - http://www.efispares.com.au/tradetips.aspx it mentions leaving key on for 60mins then switching off to bypass the immobiliser. dont know how that would work?

there's a lesson to be learned here...don't let your electronic keys out of your grasp.
I lost a bunch of keys once.
$1000 it cost to replace it all.

The marvels of modern technology at work there. Makes it impossible to steal your own car! lol

I would ring arount as I know they are usually around the 125 each pre cut to your vin and then coding is usually around the 40 mark

thanks mal. im just gonna go back to the local locksmith , i presumed that Mitsu prices may be competitive but thats not the case.

Thats for the Key Only Correct?? And add more $$$ if you need a new Remote as well?? (Based on the remote for TJ-TL)

Hi Guys,
I have a similar question, although hopefully my problem is not as hard to fix: I bought a 98 Verada Xi last weekend but the previous owner lost both remotes and only has one key left -- how easy is it to get a replacement key and what is the rough cost? Do I also have to go to Mitsubishi to get a new one?
Thanks in advance for your help,
Jet

I should rephrase that: how easy is it to get a spare key made?

Hi.
New to the forum but that's because I only just picked up my first ever Mitsubishi today. It's a 2004 TL Magna ES sedan.
My dilemma is that it came with no working remotes and only one key.
Solution: Two remotes from eBay for $49.95 each plus shipping (programming them myself will be easy - it's in the freakin manual! lol). One clone key from MrMinute at the local mall for $160.00 (coded and cut). Put the Mitsubishi OEM key away as the "master" and "spare" key and use the clone as my everyday key.
All I really need to do now is work out how to disable all previous keys/remotes from ever working again. You know... Just in case someone has them hiding somewhere.
Cheers,
Kris
Why would you go to the effort of getting a new key and then want to do that?
dont be paranoid man, save your cash and get insurance.

the old remote signals are cleared when the new ones are programmed in. once in programming mode it automatically wipes the previous saved ones

I mean disable them in the car so they don't work in the car. The point is, I don't have the other key(s) so don't want them to be able to work.
You can't disable one without disabling them all, they're all programed the same. If you're really paranoid get an aftermarket alarm that is disarmed by remote only, so the car can't be started even with the key if the alarm isn't disabled. Personally I think thats a pain in the bum though, easier to modify the car to make it unrecognizable to the previous owners, then they'll never try even if they walk right past it ;)

As soon as you go to programme a new key in, all the old keys are then erased. If you dont have the old keys handy when doing the programming, then the old keys will no longer work. They will open the door, turn on the ignition but car will nto start
The chances of the tool who took your keys knowing where the car is garaged and who is owned by is remote anyway, lets fact it, was prob a random thing

It's worth while to ask around for a good price for the spare key. I bought mine from Heidleburg Mitsubishi (TL key) for $98 include GST and the service department guys program it in for me free of charge because they knew I just bought it from Kevin. Unfortunately, you have to be there and quote the VIN number to him because that VIN number also have information on the grove pattern of your key at their private data base. I hope that helps. Cheers.
