The ash tray pulls straight out. So do the aircon vents at the top. Then you will see 2 screws that hold the aircon/heater switches to the plasic surround, undo them and then the radio surround should pull straight out. Just be careful not to break anything.
Then there will be 4 screws that hold the headunit bracket to the chassis, undo them and your pretty much home.

i think that the Verada's with their climate control fascia require a different method of removal,i would check before you try and pull it off..if it was a Magna, then ,yes, grasp and pull away, but ,a Verada...mmm

I would really wait if you arent too sure for an answer from some one who has a climate control....yes,the ash tray does pull out,but you have to remove the centre consol bit first...put the gear selector in drive to make it easier to remove....

yesterday i took out the centre console, haha i put the gear in reverse but yeah, and when i tried the ashtray i struggled. would anyone know how to pull it out? just straight out or do i pull downwards, upwards, sidewards?
but i will take your advice and wait for confirmation before i do anything

The ashtray can be a bit of a prick, when i first got the car i thought i was going to have to pull it until it broke, but thats not the case you will need abit of force, and just pull it straight out. Normally the centre console doesnt have to come out but it helps.
Hmmm!! Can't help with the Ashtray Removal, but if your struggling with that, are you going to be able to wire up a Aftermarket HeadUnit??
I've seen far too many people try and wire up a Headunit/Stereo and finishing up with Blown Components/Fuses etc... But in saying that, Search here, and you should be able to find some "How to's" on wiring up a Stereo.....
If you know how to wire one up, Just Ignore everything I Wrote Above.. :p
I had fun with this too.
There are some guides on here that should help, and I think I posted pics and a description of the process in my members ride thread (check my sig V).
also, google can be used to search the forum and might return some good results. eg: searching for this on google might hit the spot. " stereo guide site:www.aussiemagna.com/forums " (without the quotes).
Yes, the ash tray surround puts up a good fight. I too was worried about this step and it took over 5 minutes to get the sucker out. It came out easier the next couple of times. :) 1) remove the actual ashtray. 2) reach inside and try to get your fingers to the top left or top right coners and apply force towards the rear of the car - that is where the clips are and if you can pull at those 2 points, it doesn't flex and feel like it's going to break.
Just be careful of the power connectors at the back of the ciggie lighter.
Cheers & welcome!
Graham
OK, I've done 2 minutes of searching and here's what I came up with.
I think the vid will be the most helpful.

thanks heaps Graham!!!!!!! :D your thread gives me a lot of confidence
haha milo you're right i take that on board, right now i dont even have the money (THANKS VICROADS CAR REGO) for this stuff so this is purely for learning and research for a while :]
should i only go for a head unit? or do i want to change speakers and/or get subwoofer too? and then i'd need an amplifier too :/
does the head unit require an amplifier?
im interested in getting better sound quality and iPhone-iPod (music only) connectivity.
does anyone know if, with an aftermarket headunit, the antenna will be "always up" regardless of tuner, cd, iPod? or will it only go up when i select tuner?
this is my first car i've had it since september and the last thing i want is to disrespect the car my parents and myself by breaking or blowing up stuff :P

Yeah, the Video Oggy posted is pretty good! That helped me the first time I did mine :D
Re: Antenna. Most aftermarket HUs allow the antenna to go up/down depending whether the radio is on/off.
If you are happy with your current speakers, a new HU will increase the quality, but you will probably find yourself wanting to upgrade the speakers eventually :)

went into JB Hifi and Autobarn i found the wiring harnesses for $20 each
so Mitsubishi 1 plug harness + Pioneer harness (or whatever brand i get) and wiring should be easy
any downfalls to to wiring harnesses? :S
today i ripped out the ashtray successfully, i can see the clips and i can see that i didnt cause any damage! it really does come straight out its just tufff understandably :)

Yeah, great info!
I pulled the stock TJ exec HU out today, only damage was 2 cuts from the ashtray unit as it came out. lol
Mine has 2 plugs in the back, the second smaller one is not on any aftermarket units, AFAIK. Will this cause a problem? I'm guessing it is for the imobiliser blinky light, do I just leave it disconnected?

if your headunit has both a blue and a blue/white wire, make sure the blue wire is connected to your power antenna wire, which in this case will be pink in the factory wiring. Blue has power when the radio is on only, turns off (therefore retracting the antenna) when in CD/aux/usb mode etc, and blue/white is on whenever the stereo is on, to trigger amplifier(s) to turn on and off.
