View Full Version : master cylinders and bleeding
Hi all,
Will normal bleeding get rid of any possible air that may be trapped in the master cylinder??
Has any one ever come across a caliper that leaks air in, but doesn’t leak brake fluid out???
I'm just asking this as I still think there is air in the brakes of this TR.
Can't see any visible leaks.
Peddle does not sink to the floor.
The peddle does seem spongy.
The brakes are ok for every day driving, but in emergency braking the wheels don't lock Not even for a second. Even if your doing 40km, and you slam them on.
All 4 rotors have been machined.
New bendix Pads.
I flushed the fluid and use a glass jar with a clear plastic hose. Bleed the brakes by myself.
Thanks......................

Hi nago,
Perhaps this may or may not help but i recall a rubber boots sealing the piston within the brake caliper in my TR had degraded a bit this allowed air into the pot.
Whilst still allowing normal braking meant that the brakes would not lock up if emergency braking required. I had to replace the piston boots on the front brake caliper pots. They were not that easy to find (bit of ringing around)
Have you inspected them at the time of you replacing the pads?
Failing that i maybe getting a brake caliper upgrade soon and when i do could pass my current ones to you.
Hope it helps.

air can get into the brake fluid simply by pressure being put on the ends of the rubber linkages ie. during any repairs/modifications to the suspension,cv's, even wheel changes. might be a good idea to just bleed the air from the brakes and then wait to see if air returns before undertaking any drastic repairs.

Have you checked out the master cyl itself, esp inside the car for possible leaks around the push rod? i wonder if internal wear in the master cyl could cause this?
maybe the type of pads ?
sorry for late reply answer is yes. all four lock.,
Hi so all four lock. I thought that may be just the fronts would lock.
A friend at work has a TR it is a real Junker, but he just uses it for a work car, anyway he offered me to feel the brakes in it. I drove in the car park ( Big place ) at about 40km and jumped on the brakes, and they are the same as mine they don't lock. So may be his has air as well.
Soon I will take it to Midas up the street for a free inspection to see what they say,, but I won't be fooling this time,,as I'm so sick of people that say "Ya it's this or that ",and then you pay them for fixing it and it's the same as it was before.
Then they come out with all the excuses under the sun,,but want money for fixing Nothing.
Car came out worse than when it went in when I took it to Ultra tune ( They said they knew how to fix it so the revs don't drop when put in gear )
Mitsubishi also claimed the car should stay at a level idle and they could diagnose what was wrong. They told me the problem was fixed. ( It was no different From when it went in )
I complained they then said Ohhh it's an old car when it was new the idle would be perfect,,but because it's 20 years old it is as good as it gets, The mechanic said this is one of the better TR's I have driven.
I complained that they shouldn't say on the phone Yaa bring it in that’s an easy fix.
