View Full Version : Reducing exhaust drone - is it possible?

Hey Boffin Magna Blokes,

Another little issue I'd like to fix is the droning of the exhaust that reverberates through the cab at 2100 - 2500 rpm. Not so much annoying on its own but lately its starting to cause some 'buzzing' within the cab - ie. loose parts doing a mini rattling thing.

I've read in a magazine that something called a 'gonzo' can be welded to the exhaust to minimise the droning effect but I have no idea what that is or how it works.

Need some input.

Also does anyone here run the X-Force exhaust with the remote adjustable butterfly? I'm interested to know more about real world application and performance on that.

Cheers.

You'd be talking about the varex muffler,i have one of the oval 2.5'' versions and it's fantastic, when closed the car sounds stock but it does leave the engine feeling and sounding a little breathless when giving it some revs. When it's full open it has a real deep note to it and the engine revs harder which is to be expected.I like the convenience of going from quiet as a mouse for normal driving and loud as f**k when it's required.

A louvered resonator (? think they're sometimes called a spiral resonator) can be used to reduce the drone. Do some searches on google for info on how these work. I've apparently got one fitted to my TL (at least, it's what I requested the exh shop to fit, don't know if it's what they did!), but I still get drone around the 2000rpm mark with the stock VRX style muffler. Mind you, I run a 4spd box.

Check out this link:

Louvered flow approx 5% less than perforated style resonators.
