Hello all
I Recently purchased a 93 KR Verada for $200 with the intention to do a 6G72 Dohc conversion, and would really like to hear from someone who has already done this conversion to find out exactly how much is involved....
Im guessing Engine and Trans mounts but not too sure how much more is involved, any information is appretiated and maybe links to pics/write ups on others
Thanks

Look at [TUFFTR] ride thread, he has a 3.5 DOHC in his magna.
From memory its something closer to buy the whole half cut and using the engine and joining looms, and having the wiring diagrams for each car. There have been some DOHC conversions but i can't remember seeing any turbo ones. Id really really like to see a turbo one though...

There's been 1 person who's done it who posted like twice in 10 years. Information on doing this in a TR/TS is minimal but I will tell you what I do know later in the post

Wrong, All N/A conversions. 10x easier then the TT conversion

Yup, won't help him much though I'll explain in a second :P

For good reason.
A 3L N/A conversion with stock ECU and pretty much stock everything would set you back $2000-$3500
With a few upgraded parts, like extractors and ECU, that conversion will go up to $5000
Now if a halfcut costs you $2000. You need the engine, ECU, and transmission.
You will need to buy an AWD > FWD conversion plug kit for the transmission. $100ish
You will need at minimum a TT fuel pump, supra pump, or aftermarket bosch fuel pump. $100-$200ish
ECU's in these car's are known to have leaky caps. Up to you weather you risk it and take the chance, get it sent off for repair and or inspection before installation, or to use an aftermarket ECU $0 - $400 - $1500 (do nothing, repair, aftermarket ECU)
Next big thing is the piping. next to none of it from what I know will bolt up. Entirely different front ends. I would at least be getting a FMIC and custom intercooler piping made up. set aside $1000 for that to be done properly.
You've ran into about $5000 of work here without it actually working yet.
Wiring is simple to adapt at the fusebox. You could merge both looms no worries. Again, depends what you want to do. But yeah do it once do it right.
You'll need BEEFY tyres to handle the torque (440nm++)
The FWD magna transmission will bolt up no worries, but your diff won't last too long.
I'd probably use the AWD converted one. LSD's are about $1K right now.
Parts that you'd chance when doing this at MINIMUM. Exhaust manifold gaskets, rocker cover gaskets, water pump, timing belt, cam seals, crank seal, hyd tensioner, gearbox oil, engine oil and filter. add another $500 on parts.
What I can think of right now. But it's no-where near as simple as drop everything in. You will be looking at about $6K one way or another starting from scratch.

When I looked at this for the TS Wagon, I came up with a price tag of around $10k with too many unknowns.
Also, in VIC, because it's getting a Turbo engine transplant, (rather than the same style engine) it needed engineering certificates and the engineering places said things such as emission testing, possible brake upgrades required, etc. could also add to the costs.
Oh, and I think the guy in NZ who did this still didn't have a heater last time I heard.

mmm could get pretty damn interseting then, still a conversion with considering I think and would be alot of fun to drive when finished.
Thanks for your info guys I will take it all into consideration and look into it a bit more, Having friends and family in NZ where GTO parts a cheaper could be an advantage but again have to look into shipping costs etc with ozzy dollar being pretty strong at moment surely it wouldnt be too bad.
I dont know if anyone is familiar with a site www.trademe.co.nz fair amount of them being stripped etc on there.
But thanks again and keep it coming.

Main thing to consider is the age of all these parts are around 15 years old and when doing something like this, reliability comes first. Turbo's are usually worn, engines are tired and spun bearings are not uncommon. The main $ in the conversion goes to getting fresh parts.
Best of luck if you decide to go through with it. Would be a fun conversion.
With BPU's and supporting mods (and FAT tyres) there have been TT converted FWD 3000GT's which have run 11's

Yea new and or recoed parts would def be used as I would be pretty pissed when getting it all up and running then blows a box/diff or Turbo. I remember seeing one a year or so ago on Car Domain I think that had twin Turbo Conversion, If I could remember exactly where I found it would be good haha.
These magnas although they are everywhere I think they look really good with the right mods, and making one stand from the rest would be good.

Heed TUFFTR's advice. Tbh the blunt truth has scared me a bit because Im considering this conversion. I paid nothing for my magna so anything on top dosnt worry me cost wise, I am very much intersted in a source for the front cut 3000GT. My brother who owns a Legnum TT agrees with TUFFTR that its by no means a walk in the park, but thank god these forums exist to ask questions whilst doing the mods. :)

The problem is... once you buy a Magna, do the DOHC TT conversion, you just have to finish the job with Para's, Clear side repeaters, tinted windows, lowering, rims, radio, Verada bits, etc.
Now the car owes you $15K+ and you have to ask yourself if there was anything better you could have spent $15k on?
A Mitsu 3000GT/GTO with this engine stock is only around $15k
Posted a link in the e-bay thread to a n/a gto with a broken auto trans, buy it now is $3000 + shipping from tas

I agree with you mathew, I dont expect it to be easy but I do want to have fun which is what a conversion like this would be when finished and I appretiate any advice/tips and or cautions from everybody.
Thanks heaps to everyone for your input
