Hey Guys, 1st thread for myself on Aussie Magna...

I have a TJ Series II, automatic as almost everyone is...

I have had the idea of converting it to a manual gear box for a while now, I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about it. Either how to do it, where to do it, or maybe other cheaper alternatives that would give me an advantage with the auto box...

While I am at it, what are your opinions with Tip Tronic? Is it worth it and does anyone have an idea of how much it is?

word down is that its rather expensive for the conversion like 3000+

but i dunno i thik thats if u buy gearbox brand new but good like trying to find a manual gear box at wreckers harder then finding a manual magna

Not worth it, there is much more to do than just finding a gearbox, a new tranny is over 4000 new alone, then you have all the linkages, gear shifter, clutch, pressure plates etc, then the ECU has to be changed and so the TCU. If you have a spare 10,000 guess it could be done but better off selling the car and finding a manual. I'm one of the lucky ones to drive a manual and they are a blast.

Suppose I have all the required parts for a normal conversion. How difficult would it be to convert it?

Put it this way, on a 2nd gen Magna it is relatively simple, however what about on a 3rd gen Magna/Verada? (Assuming engine is out)

aparently one of the guys on here has done it.. and it worked ok..
what i heard was the gearbox went in ok, they could use the auto engine ECU and it drove ok but when it hit redline it cut out or something hence the need for an aftermarket ECU..
i also heard that you will have problems if you just buy a manual ecu and try to plug that in its place because the security system will shut the car down, so you need to change keys, barrel, ecu, tcu, blah blah..
if you got a front cut, or a donor car that you were gonna swap everything over i see no reason why it couldnt be done..

who was that that did the conversion!?!?

hmmm... i doubt thats something to do with the auto trans computer? possibly just a co-incedence?

you can re-program the keys and immobiliser thru the MUT-II program.... just need a mitsi dealer to do it for u

i think the red line cutting out was just cos it hit the limiter, the limiter isn't much over the red line is it?

I and my merchanic investiagated doing it and came out with the best concultion. Sold my auto and buyed a manual. For me it was a 2.5k change over and I went from a TE - TF. I doubt you will find a cheaper and easier way.

yeah, i've thought about that, but then u gotta find a manual and transfer all the mods etc etc over (and the fact that i need a new ECU anyway) so this is prolly the easiest way i'll get a manual, hopefully it's not too much $$$

but yeah, i'll definately take some photos and let everyone know exactly what needs to be changed
