Hi ,,, I'm about to replace the seals in a TR Magna steering rack.

Where can I buy a seal kit or individual seals ? I have seen a few comments that Mitsubishi ae a bit dear so I'm looking for any and all alternatives please.

Does a seal kit from an alternative model / type of car fit the TR Magna ?

E-bay is prooving to be a bit of a dead loss at the moment.

used to be able to get recond racks at repco
or steering and suspension mobs
sometimes exchange

you need the seals and bearings in hand to compare
when buying from a bearing and seal provider
yellow pages

or one from a wrecker

i do have an exploded view of the rack
sure are a lot of seals and bearings

Hey Magna buff,
This is a start , thanks !
:)

Any more information would be greatly appreciated. I was going to try Repco for just the seals , , I shall see what they want for exchange racks all the same. After this I might give SKF a try for seals , , I have worked as a fiter & turner for about 25 years so this kind of stuff isn't too scarey , I'd just like to know where to start looking.

:)

Not sure how far your knowledge goes... so Ill just say what I know
I have been given the impression that you need special tools to reco a power steering rack.
Also... you need to make sure the shaft is perfect otherwise all your effort well be wasted and it looks like its going to be a lot of effort.
Could you post how you went after? Curious how long itll take.
Also wonder how much all the parts will cost.
Bursons do recoed racks. 250-300 usually.

:) I'll be fine with tools , , 3 lathes , milling machines, surface grinder etc etc

Knowledge , , , , I have been a fitter & turner for 25 years, I've machined teflon rings for the power steering control valve in a Jag XJ5.3 cause they wanted $1200 for a set.

I'm just hoping to find some knowledge of where / who sells seal kits

Why, oh why are TE TF TJ TR and TS racks $350 on e-bay and the TM TN and TP models $150 ?

the first gen racks have fewer seals and bearings

I mean special tools that relate to installing some of the seals... I dont know about this rack in particular though.
Great job to have. Can make anything I bet.
So youve tried Repco, Bursons and Bearing Wholesalers?
Howd you go with chasing SKF?

I imagine you are the first on this forum to attempt a rack rebuild yourself, most of us just let them leak or buy a recon job.

For parts, I would go to someone who reconditions them for a living, and ask - nicely - if they can supply you with the seals and bearings.

I would like very much to see pictures of the rebuild process when you do it, others would too I imagine. lol

Ok , I see lots of kits for racks ............but no mention of Magna's . Did the Magna exist in the US under some other name or would a TR steering rack fit another model of Mitsubishi.

As I get the rack rebuilt I will take photos and post them.

(a little off topic ....... what thread do I go to to find out how to undo the bolt on the distributor end of a 4 cly camshaft. I'm not much of a thump it with a big hammer type of guy , , there must be a way of stopping the camshaft from rotating)

Ummmmm , dumb question (sorry) according to this site ..... http://www.productioncars.com/gallery.php?car=2708&make=Mitsubishi&model=Diamante
.... a Magna and a Diamante are one and the same pretty much ????

Therefore steering rack kit should be the same ?

Does the rack have an oem number like MB636962 on it anywhere? Seal kit for that one is MB815388 and about $80 USD + postage if you really want GENUINE OEM. You'll have to get the numbers to be sure though, but that kit fits both LHD & RHD F07W Magna/Diamante wagons (ex MMAL)

Could try http://www.driveline.com.au/ out of their catalogue TR,KR,TS,KS Rack Seal Kit 65.557

Their HO is in Brisbane, branches scattered around eastern side of Australia. Not sure how the Acacia Ridge Branch would have gone though in the flood.
