View Full Version : Confusing oil question

Sorry for all my annoying questions lately!

Just checked the oil and it is around a 3rd full (halfway between a quarter and a half)

Can I just add the GTX3 oil we already have to the oil tank thing? Will it hurt at all? I have no idea what type of oil the previous owners used, so have no idea if it will hurt.

Thanks for any help :) Much appreciated :)

It's better to ask first, you've done the right thing. Just one thing scares me - "Oil tank"?

It's gotta go in the front rocker bank (might be black or silver), don't add much at a time and wait 30-60 seconds for the oil to get to the sump where it can give a new accurate reading. Make sure its on level ground when checking the level, and always wipe the dipstick before re-dipping to check.

How long have you had the car? If its been a while it might be worth doing an oil + filter change so you know its good from then.

The "oil tank" thing, is it black with a cap on it, and the dipstick attached to the cap? If so, thats for the power steering and do NOT put engine oil in there! Power Steering oil only!

Lol I must sound stupid hey!! I do know where the oil goes, trust me!!! The question was asking whether it would hurt mixing oils, as I have only had the car a few days and have no idea what oil the previous owner used. So would it hurt just adding gtx3 to it?

Nope. As long as you put it in the engine, not the power steering reservoir. lol

lol Awesome, thanks :)

I should learn to word things properly!!

Might as well just wait a few weeks and change the oil completely at once along with the rest of a service.

Mixing oils is never a good idea as you have no ideas what particular additives each particular oil company is using in their formulation or how these additives will react together. Just do an oil change, it's easy and your engine will thank you :D

I just got a 2000 magna advance 3.5L, its done 204000 km, runs well, I just changed the oil and put in valvoline 20W50 plus liquimoly engine protect and changed the filter.

I noticed on the dipstick that someone has quite deliberately etched a little line about 5mm above the 'full' notch. Ive got the book and this garage serviced the car in adelaide from when it was new til 150,000km so I assuming it was them and they knew what they were doing. Anyone know what this means? Im assuming it means ur safe to be slighly over the 'official' full notch? Im eager not to overfill it, its currently pretty much bang on the full notch or maybe very slightly over but I dont think i've overfilled it.

Also - and ill prob post this in a seperate thread- I spoke to a bloke at the repco in Katherine NT near where I live and he said that around 200,000km the car is due for a new timing belt. How urgent is this? I probably cant afford it for another 5000km or so, i.e. by ~210,000km. What are the possible ill consequences of leaving a timing belt change a bit late?

cheers

Check the service book when the timing belt was last changed.
Recommended change interval is 5 years or 90,000 km whichever is first. All depends on when it was changed last, I hope it isn't the original!

Oil can be above the top mark by 5 mm without harm.

If you are sure the belt has been replaced (ie. it has been stamped in the book) just see how long time wise (max 5 yrs) or how many km it's been since it was done. You might be right, but if there is no record of it being changed, or it's been over 100,000km at least get it inspected & replaced asap. It's not worth a long term risk, worst case scenario, old or worn belts can break/snap possibly leading to bent valves.. which will leave u on the side of the road and cost big $$ to repair. I learnt from a bad experience, had an old pintara that had it's original belt up until 240,000km (I didn't think about it) and it was severely frayed and spat threads of belt everywhere, big mess.

As said above, it really isnt worth the risk. It might last another year or it could snap tomorrow. It might be worth popping the timing belt cover off and having a gander to see if its looking worn or fraying but this may only put your mind at ease. Seriously, just chuck a belt replacement on the plastic and be done with it
