Hey guys/girls,

Just went to an exhaust shop to find out what is wrong with my exhaust (go figure). Found out that the flexi-pipe has a leak and the cat converter is blocked and will need replacing.
Was also told that the rear muffler is one off a 4cyl, which means that the size of the piping is smaller. So basically, when the middle section pipe meets the rear sections pipe - they are different sizes, which is restricting the airflow -:headbange

First place quoted me over $900 for the repair, which included them putting a straight-through muffler at the rear (wanted to get this done anyway). That seemed huge.
So I went to another place and he quoted me $650, including a straight-through rear muffler.

Do these prices seem fair, or are they still too high? I live in the Frankston area, so if anyone knows of someone who has competitive prices, that'd be good as well..

Cheers,
Sam.

Size of the piping shouldn't matter. I believe the piping between the 2.4's and the 3.0's were the same. On the 3.5's I think it was slightly thicker but you're not going to notice a difference there.

I think by the sounds of it they're just looking for some more money from the project.

Just get the flex pipe fixed, and the cat, and you'll notice a nice difference :)

I looked at the pipes, it was definitely different... Rear was noticeably smaller than the middle. Oh, my bad - he said the piping was from a 2nd gen 4cyl -.-
So it is smaller. But does it still not matter?

Best bet, give mal a call. He looks like he has plenty of 3rd Gen exhausts lying around his shop, would cost much less then getting a new one and if its one off a TJII its a nice little upgrade

Yea, and I'm sure Mal wouldn't charge you too much to put it on for you either.

What a load of crap, the 4cyl and 6cyl third gen TE/F have the same exhaust system, they ALL have the smaller piping at the back end lol, this exhaust shop is making it up as they go me thinks. Second Gen exhause will not fit a third gen unless cut to buggery to make fit, believe me I used to have have a VRX rear muffler on my KR and was a very interesting fit

You have several options, you can update your system from cat back to a TH/J std system, I have all the parts here, the cats I get $90 for from the metal recyclers so will pass one on for this price, centre pipe and muffler from a TJ say another $150. If you want it all fitted, allow 2 hours, so $120 all up $360 for a good seconhand system. The cat would have under 100k on it so shoudl have plenty of time left in it

Getting the exhaust system replaced with one from a TJII VRX :D
Thanks for the advice guys!
