Gday guys,

Just got a 1998 TF Magna Advance.

When the car is idling or accelerating sometimes there is a rattle. It is mainly noticable when the car is cold, although it doesn't rattle everytime I start the car. It does do it when moving, but mainly through 1st and 2nd gear. It sounds like it is coming from somewhere at the back of the engine.

Someone suggested the internals in the Car Convertor is damaged but i am not sure.

I had the timing belt replaced about 1000km ago.

thanks in advance :)

id say its the diverter in your engine pipe, has a tinny sound to it, usually noticable when exhaust is cold and hasn't expanded, can cost anywhere from $100-$250 to fix. some say once the divider is removed you loose performance but i had mine done and didnt notice a change..

what does the divider do? and where is it located?

it diverts the exhaust gases so it has a smoother flow out the exhaust.

edit. sorry should of said diverter in first post not divider

it connets the front and rear headers of the engine and continues along to the entrance to the catalylic converter

you probly should get it looked at or replaced ,cause if it comes loose it will travel to the cat and restrict flow, then you will notice a performance decrease

It could also be incorrectly adjusted accessory belts - on my TL the PS belt gets a 'harmonic vibration' between 1200 and 1300 revs....you can see the belt vibrating at that rev range. See the downloadable manual on how to adjust:
http://www.lisho.net/?page_id=3 You need to download, extract to a CD and then copy from CD to your HD.
Mine started after the timing belt was replaced as well.

Update - it now sounds like there is an exhaust leak. It sounds like it is leaking at the back on the engine. I haven't had a good look I just noticed it last night when I was out. It is possible for this exhaust divider to cause this? It kind of has a deep sound now and droans a bit.
