Ive had a Unichip sitting around for a while that I am finally going to get fitted, and I was wonder whether my shoddy auto box would affect the tune at all.

It has the typical bits of metal floating around in it and slips into gears a bit meaning I will need to replace it at some point, but this shoujldnt mean I will need a retune come putting a new box in should it?

why are you getting a tune? because you want more power from your car? ie you want to drive it hard and go quicker than it already does?

i wouldnt suggest driving your car hard with a stuffed auto box, might wana sort that out first before you go chasing HP.. :)

What above said^

You'll only blow the box up quicker.

Anyhoo, No, the tune you get with the 4sp will be fine no matter what gearbox is behind it.

Car has been getting poo economy for the last 6 months, done all of the usual suspect checks for the reason and nothing is working.. ive got the Unichip sitting there to put in, I figured i'd give it a go at tuning to 95 or 98 and getting if I can get some decent economy in doing so.

Car has no aftermarket parts, I wouldnt expect more than a few kW from the tune, but if it gives me better economy itll probably pay itself off in a year

go from a 4speed to a decent 5 speed tippy?

mate if your car is getting bad economy cause something is wrong with it you dont fix it by getting a tune..

sounds like your car needs some TLC rather than a unichip

Got a 5 speed tippy. As for tlc.. Short of changing the gearbox there isn't really much I can thing of that I haven't done. O2 sensor etc are fine, spark plugs are all sweet, rocket gasket leaks a bit but nothing major.. Could a worn rotor cap or anything decrease economy without affecting the running of the car? Could also try swapping back from a k&n panel to a standard panel and see if it makes a difference.. But $$ for guess work really isn't ideal.

Even if it doesn't sort whatever is causing my crappy economy now, at least a 98 tune should show some improvement.

Is your coolant temperature gauge behaving normally?

One thing that might cause this is a dodgy coolant temperature sensor (or wiring between the sensor and ECU), though it usually has to be reporting quite cold temps (compared to normal) for it to be a problem - I don't know what the actual threshold temp is for the ECU to decide the engine's warm enough to dispense with the extra fueling applied to a "cold" engine.

and from the research Ive done, since that parameter is a feature that doesnt need to be tampered with, even on high performance car's, we may never know....
I know on my ECU it's set above 60deg all extra fuelling is shut off.
Best to hook up a scanner to it (local auto elec can provide this service) and see what that sensor is doing.
if faulty, it may revert back to a default temp of 27deg, which is what most aftermarket ECU's have built into them.
