Have not been around Magna's for long but I got my new car a couple months ago and until now has been driving well

2 nights ago I was driving and started to hear a weird bang or thump sound from under the bonnet. I have RACV so called them as was scared to drive and was told by the guy that my alternator had died and the bearing or something was failing, was safe to drive home.

Finally got around to taking to a mechanic today who recons that it is a bearing inside the bottom of the engine. I dont understand much of this stuff but something to do with the main shaft inside the engine, said the engine needs to be replaced.

Now the car has been in my family since new, only has 170k's on it and has never given any trouble but my grandfather did only service it when the k's were due which I have been told was not the right thing to do as oil apparently goes off and the mechanic said this could be the cause

Guess the point of this is I want a second opinion. Is there anyone here who people recommend. I need to make sure I am doing the right thing as I want to hang onto the car but if I am going to spend this much money I want to make sure this will be the issue

Thanks

Absolutely call Malcolm (Madmagna) at Mits-Fix. www.mitsfix.com

Your mechanic could well be telling you utter bollocks, and even if he's not he will probably charge you 3x what an engine is really worth. Pretty sure Malcolm has a few lying around in his workshop, or can at least tell you what they're really worth.

And he'll know in like 5 seconds what the real problem is too.

Just gonna to back this up again, Mits-fix is the place you want to go.
Malcolm knows more about Magnas than any ordinary mechanic and charges prices that are beyond competitive.
Good luck with it and let us know how it goes!

Feel free to make contact, my contact details are in the mits-fix contact and payment thread or also on www.mitsfix.com as well

While is hard to tell from what you are saying, the symptoms sound big end-ish but would have to hear to make sure is not a knock from a pump or similar, can do a few tests before we go throwing new engines in for no reason.....
