Hi all, i have noticed recently when reversing my car out first thing of a morning, that the automatic tranny is not smooth at all, if i leave it to roll at idle it shudders (or maybe more acurately, surges) quite a bit, but once warm operates normally, this only seems to happen in reverse and out of all the Automatic cars i've had over the years this is the only one i've felt do this. Could it just need a service (only had the 380 for a month and not due for it's 90,000 service for another 4000k) or could it be someting else?

when was the last transmission service not the motor service
I would get the trans powerflushed and if problem persists than it may be a bit more terminal

Possibly fluid needs replaced?

You mean the car is not smooth while its cold and reversing? Surge and shudder are engine problems, why blame the gearbox?

Merely from the fact it will do it in reverse, but not apparent in Drive, If it were the engine i would have asumed it would be present in both gears

I only have the stamped service book to go on, the previous owner did not leave any receipts except for the 75k service (Ex St George Bank car) so am unsure when the last transmission service was done unfortunately. I will say aside from this it is as smooth as, probably the best transmission i've experienced

Yeah, will do, how much (on average of course) does a transission service/flush cost for a 380?

I had 6 months ago cost $150.00 that was at 45000klms made a diffrence 90.000klms is way to long

150 would barely cover the fluid costs
bout 250-400

I think I've experienced what you say on the TW Magna with the F4A51 box. So you feel a continuous pulsation at a constant frequency with the foot off and you're on a flat surface as the car is creeping backwards? My belief is that when the idle switch is activated in the TPS , the ECU/TCU modulates/pulses the solenoids in the valve body to control pressure. This could be what you are sensing.
As soon as you get it above idle, it goes? My original box did this but I've moved and my new driveway is steep so I don't know if it still has this characteristic. I think from memory it would disappear when it was at op temp. I was a little concerned too, thought it was strange but it did'nt seem to cause any major problems. A fluid change would be a good idea and is cheap insurance for the box. I found genuine fluid was cheap at $35 / 5L (2 years ago), you'd need at least 2 containers for reasonable flush doing it how the w/shop manual states. I'm assuming the F5A box is very similar in capacity.

First thing to do is check the fluid colour and integrity. Pop the bonnet and have a look on the dipstick. It's located to the right of the front manifold as you look at the engine bay from the front of the car, and just under the front snorkel section of the air intake. The fluid should be pink/red and smooth, not black/brown or of rough consistency.
Also check the fluid level. Transmission needs to be warm and in "D". Cycle it through all the gears and leave it in "D", then check the fluid level once it's warm.
If the level is low or the colour is compromised, get a powerflush as has been mentioned by the other guys. You'll pay anywhere from $200-$350 or so at Mitsubishi. Any less and it's possible all they've done is drop the fluid and replace it, which isn't going to get rid of all the old transmission fluid from the torque convertor and clutch packs.

As above. Check fluid colour and level. If dark get flushed. Will cost usually around 200, i charge 160 for the flush if not too dirty and 200 if excessive

Yeah, that almost exactly describes it, have checked the oil, its light brown in colour, so definetley of for a flush ASAP.

The writer talks about experiencing low speed shuddering, especially when cold. I have also experienced this in my car and I'm wondering if it's just a common trait and nothing to worry about. The shuddering was evident when I bought it with 30,000 klms on the clock. It now has 100,000 klms showing and no problems. The transmission has been serviced once, at 75,000 klms and made no difference to the shuddering.

Yeah, it's not quite as bad as the guy makes out in the story though.
