My key fob is fast disintegrating and I fear it won't last much longer. Can anyone please tell me how I can get another one?
thanks

You have 2 options
First is to go to Mits and order one to your Vin and have programmed, by the time key is in and programmed about $150ish
Second is Mr Minute or similar locksmits, can get the code from your key, cut you a new one and replicate the code from your current key to the new one, only issue is that the last one I priced was up near $200 from them
I have the orgiinal set of keys for both my vehicles. Each car has 2 'normal' keys and 1 'valet' key, which operates the door and ignition, but not the glovebox. My wife has a set of 2 normal keys (one for each car) and so do I. The valet key is wired inside the car in case we lose our keys somewhere. Since access to the valet key requires getting into the car, I have a spare key (uncoded) wired underneath. If anyoe finds that, they cannot start the car. This saves the cost of getting the car towed to a dealer and then getting keys cut and coded. The spare key for the TF Magna cost me $15 from Mr Minit. My car (a Pajero) has a simpler key which cost me $5.
Once I saw a kid get screwed by the local dealer. Kid was skiing at Perisher and lost the keys to Mum's Lancer. It was flatbedded back to Cooma and then they had to phone Mummy to assure themselves that it was a legit case. Then they phoned Mits in Adelaide to get the code. Then thelocal locksmith made up a key, and then the dealer coded it to the car. Total cost over $600, and a full day's skiing lost as well. After that, they said that Mummy would have to get her keys recoded in Sydney as well. That is why I have spare keys with the car, but hopefully inaccessible to anyone else but me.

I have a TE and I don't recall my key having a chip in it. Are you referring to the remote for the car? if so they are between $50 - $100 and you can program it yourself.

All thrid gen cars have transponder keys, you can not see the chip but if you smash off the black part and then try and start the car, you are up for a new key lol.
The remote is completely separate
I have just returned from a workshop locally where they have been trying to get a Magna TF going for a week which had a new key, they were told that they did not have to code the key, then they started replacing parts such as cas, dist eetc etc. Imagine how they felt when I walked in with my MUTT-2, programmed the keys, charged them $120 for the callout and left them with a running car all in under 10 mins. BTW< they were told by a dealer that they did not have to code the key?

IIRC "key fob" is Yank speak for the remote. lol (Feel free to abuse me if I'm wrong, OP)

Al these bits here (excluding the keys themselves) are "key fobs" AKA dangly bits on your key ring.
From Wikipedia: "Electronic key fobs are used for activating such things as remote keyless entry systems on motor vehicles. "

If you look where the "blade" of the key goes into the black part (with MITSUBISHI on it) you will see a 4x4mm square on one side of the plastic, thats where the chip is.

Imagine how the customer is gonna feel when they pass that cost on to them! Can't see them wearing their own stupidity.

So can a "spare" be cut cheap, that allows you into the car but doesn't allow starting because it doesn't have the chip? Reason being I like to have a key to take out surfing, but would prefer not to take a "proper" key, so if I can leave the good key in the car and just use a cheapie to get in, all the better!

Yes - See my posting above. I had a spare uncoded key cut by Mr Minit in Aspley (Brisbane) for $18.00. This is now wired under the car and the real coded key is hidden inside the car so that we can at least get mobile if we lose out keys somewhere.
