View Full Version : Installing Climate control from a TL ES Magna?

Gday people.
I've found myself a TL ES magna that seems to have all of the dash and associated parts still in tact. I was interested in possibly doing a complete dash conversion including the climate control.
So what parts would I need from the TL? Obviously I'll need the centre unit with all the controls, I'll need the dash loom and the servo's, I'll need the sensor from under the windscreen and some piping but is there anything else? I would really appreciate a list to where they're located and what they may even look like.
In terms of fitament of the dash itself, will it match up fairly well to my dash? The centre console surrouning the gearstick is missing but I'm fairly certain that I can still fit my original TJS2 gear surround anyway (otherwise out will come the hacksaw :P). The TL's were upgraded with vents that went to the rear passengers so I might need to look into buying the centre console and the lid as well.
I appreciate all help.
Thank you,
TheKovac

So one knows what parts constitute a TL/TW climate control system?

Sorry mate, can not do that, you need the TJ Dash Harness, then you can use some of the parts from the TL. You can not use the TL main harness in the TJ as there are many differences in the set up for ABS etc thus it will not plug into some of the critical points.
If you are serious about using the TL set up, I can set you up with this, the one at Jolleys will be ok for a facia and a few control motors but that is about it

I figured I couldn't use the dash loom from the TL, but could I still use the sensors? I was planning to modify the existing tj loom I have to include a few wires that would go to the sensors and actuators on the vents...I'm fairly handy with electronics so I'm willing to muck around with it. I am wondering if the existing tj loom would have any of the required cables to run the system? How much modification in terms of running extra cables etc Would be needed? Do the sensors just require power from the unit and then to be grounded?
So just to confirm the main parts are the facial, control unit, ssensors and vent servo's. Anything I missed other than the loom?
Cheers for the help there Mal - really appreciate it :)

Just a quick update to anyone in the future that wants to fit a TL centre console into their magna.
I currently have the TL centre console fitted and fully working. To achieve this it involved conducting a full climate control conversion using KJ Series II parts except the control system. In order for the TL climate control system to work you will need to install the inside temp sensor. I have done this by connecting the yellow wire on the sensor to the pure yellow wire on the loom (found on the big climate control plug) and the with purple wire on the sensor I had to fit it in the first open spot on the bottom row from the left - the smaller plug. Bit hard to explain - Onkytonk did a better job in a thread I found.
As for the actual centre console itself - it does fit - but it isn't perfect. Some of the inside clips don't fully lock in but the dash is not loose and does take a bit of effort to remove. I have tried to stretch the centre console opening in the dash all to no avail. The fit isn't perfect but you'd be hard pressed to notice this. I'm happy with it. The actual system itself is fantastic - easy as to use, does not activate the aircon all the time, holds stable temperatures and doesn't make annoying beeping noises!
If you used a KJ Series 1 loom, are you sure the cabin temp sensor plug wasn't already there? We just installed one in a mates car and were shocked to find the plug already there (we had only just finished installing the temp sensor to Jesse's car with a KH loom so knew exactly what the pinout was).
Diagram for those interested:

I'm sure someone will thank you for the diagram there Life.
I personally found no plug on the loom I was using. Mine was a loom from a KJ Series II Verada Ei. Did you guys use the Xi or Ei loom? I did find the yellow wire and tapped into it a bit lower in the loom, but I had no luck finding a wire No.34 on the B13 plug. I hacked to pieces a spare harness I had lying around in order to remove one pin to which I wired the purple cable from the interior temp sensor too and then inserted it into the No.34 spot on that diagram.
Yea the KH we had to repin to add the wire, the KJ1 Ei harness we fitted to Ben's car (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=92762&p=1457144&viewfull=1#post1457144) already had it, we were fitting a KJ unit anyways though so it was redundant.
We were more concerned with repinning the door loom on the pass side at the time as TJ/KJ S1/early MY02 had a 2-row plug, S2/late MY02 had a 3-row so we needed to repin the while door plug.
It was found when I looked at the plug and was like "wtf is this for" - then remembered doing Jesse's TL climate mod a couple days earlier, checked B13 and yep! it was already there.

That is so weird! How did yours have it and mine didn't? :wtf:! What a mystery! Mine must've been a KJ S2 because every other plug hooked straight in - didn't have to repin any plugs or anything. Connect everything up and it all worked straight off the bat. Car I removed the loom from also had the Series II badge on the boot. Strange.......
Good work with repinning though. I cannot repin these harnesses to save my life! I ended up hacking the spare harness I had to remove the pins from it. I'd rather cut, solder & wrap every cable rather than attempt to repin a harness.

Hmmm, so much wrong again with the info here
ALL TJII and KJII had a 3 row plug for the pass side door, there were NONE with a 2 row plug for the drivers side door. Another thing that changed on the series was the door loom now lived in a plastic housing so to speak, has a white one on one side, black one on other side and is held in by 2 screws. The screw holes are even present in the TE series so you can use all of the J wiring in an E series and still be able to mount these loom holders
The change came part way through the "update" or what people call series 1.5 ( have several of these cars here right now and have stripped over 30 of them in the last 12 months)
Also, the mystery wire for the temp sensor, it is NOT there on J series. The plug you are referring to is most likely the additional wire that plugs into the head unit, has the same plug on it from memory. Again I have just checked a series 2 I have here right now as well as an Xi Series 2 I have here, both do not have this plug on them
It was definitely not the mute plug, we traced the wires into the climate control plug and as I said, had installed this a couple days prior to Jesse's car. Have I got S1/MY02 and S2 confused with the 2-row/3-row plug thing?
The loom coming out was a MY02 with a 3-row plug so may have thrown me off. The donor loom was kind of an unknown, but I knew it was J-series as the H-series was already used.

Dean the loom was a series 1 if it's the one you got off Cary

Yea, I've had a bit of a think about it. Definitely wasn't a KJ2 but it had the possibility of either KJ1 Ei, or TJ2 Sports (Personally I haven't found any difference between my TJ2 VRX loom and a KJ2 in the main dash harness) - I seem to have all the same shit?
Edit: Edited my previous posts to reflect the fact I had it backwards ;)

Here is my thread about doing this conversion in to a TJ S1 if anyone can explain to me the obviously simple wiring solution that would be great.
1. In the diagram of the wiring are we looking at the front or rear of the plugs?
2. If the rear do I pin the purple wire B12 in to the slot where the Black/White wire is or to another slot? and if so do I cut and discard the wire in that spot of solder them all together?
3. Is it just as simple as wiring the Purple and Yellow wires in to the same position they would be on the TL loom in to the TJ loom?
have also noticed that in the position 10 on the TJ loom is a solid yellow wire already and position 34 is blank as above. So I can pin pos-34 no worries but what do I do with pos-10?
