When i slow down, my Te v6 is nearly coming to a stop, and then it clunks and jolts hard back into first. There is no other problem changing gears, and no problems when accelerating. anyone got any ideas? feels like something might need adjusting?

Mine (TE 3.0L Auto) doesn't usually go back to 1st unless you actually stop then get moving again (depending on how you throttle it). Have you tried an ECU reset? It may of gotten into the bad (learned) habit, an ECU reset will see it relearn your driving habits.

Yeah the early TE's have this issue. The INVECS constrol logic gets a bit discombobulated. Need a reset. If this doesn't work then it sometimes needs replacing.

Funnily, the INVECS control in the early cars was by far the smoothest for shifting and the grade logic was best, but the longevity was crap for this issue. In my TE, this problem cost me a transmission rebuild.

I used to have the cluncking problem when going from 2nd to 3rd, but I've found that doing a transmission flush every couple of years keeps problem at bay. A transmission specialist even told me I needed a new gearbox, until I found this forum and realised that it was a transmission fluid flush that was the first thing to try.

I haven't had to reset the gearbox in years now.

tried to reset it a few times, for a while it seemed to have gotten much better, but came back after a few days. transmission was totally flushed when i had the engine out. it was rebuilt a few years back too. i had a problem where it went into limp mode, changed the input and output sensor and that sorted the problem out. the sensors were from a tf from memory, but they looked the same. is there anything else? i was thinking the tps might be a little off.

worst case if it was the trans, would it get any worse? how bad to these things get?

also, it happens just as your about to stop, like a second or so before, and so it kinda makes the car jolt forward. what about vacuum leak, would that cause that problem?

Hmmm...how hard is your jolt? My TE used to do that and still does it every now and then. However, it only jolts hard when...

1) Cold start (or early morning start) & 2) When I push the car too hard and it comes to a complete stop suddenly.

A shift relearn might be the thing you need but since you've already done it hmmm. The only thing I could possible think of (from experience) is the car is idling too high causing a delay and hesitation to shift back to first. Mine did that when the throttle body was dirty and when the ISC was gone. But it may not be applicable to yours. Eitherway I came to accept that my TE changes late and I time it so that I release the brake "just" when I feel it shifting down and push down again to get a smooth pattern. Ahhh the TE :)

thanks for all your input guys - another problem solved. I took the air intake off and the isc out again and gave it another good clean with carby cleaner. It looks like there was some small clumps of black carbon in the very back of the ISC hole. i cleaned it last week and it was prety dirty, but there must have been some more still lodged in the back that was too stuck to come out. so cleaned it, cleaned inside the plenum aswell with some carby cleaner and upper engine foaming cleaner, put it all back together and hey presto! shifts perfectly now. i didnt even do a reset, just put it back together and road tested. I then let the car cool a few hours, and drove about 80kms yesterday and it didnt do it once, and it ran super smooth. (and it used to do it every single time i was stopping)

So clean and clean again! glad thats fixed because it was pretty annoying!

Also for prople in vic, i got the upper engine foaming cleaner (combustion chamber and induction system cleaner) from FJ's discount tools at bayswater for $2 a can. it was a Suburu product and had the suburu name crossed off so guess thats why they were selling it cheap. worked really well too.

STOCK UP! It's usually $10-20 per can!

Sweet as! My only hope is you didn't ruin your gearbox with the rough late shifting to first (which from your post was related to the car attempting to switch whilst still in high revs) . Mine seems to have survived a similar ordeal. Glad it worked out though.
