Hey Guys, i know its probably a pretty generic Question But i just Bought a Sports Magna for $600 With a so called "Blown Gearbox" Got it home to realise the gearbox was almost bone dry, spent $94 on transmission fluid to find out that the gearbox infact works and doesnt need to be replaced, BUT on the other hand, transmission fluid is pissing out of the Drivers side Driveshaft seal where the shaft enters the gearbox, Could this be a build up of pressure? as too much oil was put in? can that happen?:ninja: as i was unsure of the level that was already in there....it did take 8 litres though as i was told 9 liters was the gearbox capacity.
I Still want a new Seal though, as they arent meant to leak, so any advice on where i can get one would be awesome!! :D
All in all, this car turned out to be VERY Cheap fix :woot:

I'm gonna guess madmagna on these forums might have one/some? He wrecks magnas/veradas regularly so it's probably worth getting in touch. Maybe have a look at his mits-fix site too?

Try a Bursons, Autobarn, REPCO or a local Auto transmission repairer. If they don't have them ring Mitsubishi, give them your VIN details & they should have one the next day.

Pretty sure if its a series 3 its around 5.5L total for an auto box. Not sure about series 2 or manuals .
Regardless of that your right it shouldnt leak as any over pressure will vent out the gearbox dipstick.

"Blown gearbox" could be a shattered diff, allowing the drive shaft on one side to move about and release oil past the seal. Worth checking. Look for play where the drive shaft enters the gearbox.

when i need to replace a seal (eg crank shaft seal), because i need my car to go and buy the actual seal, i go to my local mitsi, buy the seal in this case it was 16 dollars. then i go to a local bearing shop, give them the seal, explain its for the engine on my car. buy 2 for 1.50 and return the original to mitsi. i have done this 3 times now. one was the drive shaft seal on the passenger side. i do this because i dont want to pull the car apart, get the seal out, record the size and type, then put it all back together to go into the city to buy the part, then redo the process. sofar i have saved around 40 dollars doing this. you could just spend the 10-20 on a mitsu seal though. (likely made in the same factory ar the 1 dollar one) if it is too much trouble, or if you dont have a good bearing/seals shop. the place i go to in cairns is called allied bearing. really helpfull mob. and they are a wholesaler for kingcrome tools, which cam in handy when i bought/calibrated my torque wrench. i bought it there coz i always feel a bit guilty making some poor bloke walk through kilometers of isles looking for a 1 dollar part, so they can make 80 cents profit. lol

Had this one both my KE and KJ.
Part number is MD755526 (written in the back of my haynes, cos I knew Id need it again)
Large flat blade, hook into it and wedge it out. Bash in a new one with a large socket or a piece of wood and mallet. I always put a little sealant around the edges before I put it in.
Also some places will try to sell you the "correct" seal which you will find is brown and too small. The Mitsu one is black and slightly larger.

If it helps either of these should fit. The only difference I can tell is one is NOK brand and one is NDK. MN130498, MN130496. Unfortunately it does not give me the dimensions which is all you would need I guess to get a seal from CBC.
They sell for about $5 from Mitsubishi in the US but not worth the hassle when you add postage + the time it takes to get here.

In all the catalogs i have MD755904, MD755526 come up for the manual trans, MN130498, MN130496 for the auto. I suspect either will do the job though because both have been fitted to the Autos in japan. I don't have the Aust version but this included our Exported wagons and Diamantes and the japan market.
The US catalog does not show the MD755904, MD755526 for the Diamante auto, however if these numbers are put online with a dealer part search it will show Diamante auto with MD755526 now superceeded by MN132370.
Clear as mud really. Anyway safest way is to use the VIN at the dealer but I think all the info is pretty sound so far.

Guys, all round a big thankyou! VERY helpfull :)
And Gas_hed is that just a mitsubishi part number or something Generic??
Ill give mitsubishi a call tomorrow, all in all the car drives great! I gave it a spin up and down the back alley to make sure it was all good....and no problems at all minus the Leak, there isnt any play in the shaft however, BUT the car was sitting there for 18 months in a paddock all alone, so i wouldnt be suprised if the seal had turned to shit, considering the reason the car ended up in the paddock was because of this "Blown Gearbox" The Douchebag just didnt have any oil in it!!
Thanks again Guys, Didnt think id get so many responses! :)
Ill definately be posting with more Problems (Touch wood, i hope i dont get anymore! ) haha!!

Yeah, im 99% sure its a 3 Series TF....The Dude at supercheap was pretty certain i needed to purchase 8 Litres of oil though :S As thats what it "aparently" said in his Booklet instore....
Nothing came out of the dipstick and after taking the lot of oil , the dipstick seemed to read normal....so maybe hes right? i dont know.....
Not sure if it makes a difference if its tiptronic? :S

Worth getting a price for fluid at the dealer too. I found they were actually cheaper than the castrol. Last time I bought SPIII it was about $35 / 5 L.
You're lucky the pump in the box is still good if they've run it dry, it may be a good idea to flush the box out as per the book. The 8 L capacity applies for a dry box, the torque convertor will (should) still have fluid in it.
it's around 5L for a simple sump drain and refill. You'll need 10L at least for a flush and would not hurt to even grab another 5l to be sure.

my guess would be the seal died along time ago and was the cause of it loosing all its fluid.. so basically this guy gave you his car for "nothing" because it had a buggered $5 seal.. haha, idiot.. :)

Damn Straight! hahaha Yeah id say its perished from sitting for so long also, but i took it for a quick burn up and down the laneway while it was leaking, perfect gearbox, tiptronic, cruise control, EVERYHING works oh and came with a sound system haha this dude didnt know what he was getting rid of! Douchebag lol
Also make sure that the fluid is appropriate for mitsubishi gearboxes and not dextron3.

Did you price it at the Dealer? I'm sure they came in 5 litre lots. You still did well if the car turns out to be reliable though.

I Didnt think to check the dealer first, and because i have no car to get around supercheap is just down the road...so i opted for that option lol....
But all in all, the car has been starting everyday, Driving perfect ( as in small runs up and down the back alley and a few laps of the reserve next door) its running VERY well :)
So indeed, a bargain! Could definately sell for a profit on this one.!
