View Full Version : Mufflers & Cutting the rear bar for another exhaust outlet.

hey guys..

I've looked through the other muffler threads but i thought i'd start something a bit more specific.

had my car on the hoist the other day , and got me thinking that all that room on the left needs to be filled with another muffler :)

with duplicating the outlet for the left , is it as straight forward as sticking some paper on the right side , tracing the curve of the bar and the exhaust outlet , then flipping it over and put it on the left side ?

how did yours turn out when it was cut , any close up photos ??

i want it more for the look of the twin outlets really , not interested in exhaust modifications for performance changes , nor do i want a loud & drony piece of crap..

i believe i have read that the Birklee muffler doesn't quite fit on the left side , is this correct ?
i did hear this on Braedz car and from memory it sounded good , but don't want it any louder.

With the muffler selection , is this something i would need to discuss with the exhaust shop and try a few different mufflers on the left to see if they fit , or has someone got an idea that would suit requirements as stated above ??

Please , no Cannon's :)

Thanks for your help guys...
Cheers,
Brad.

I posted some pics of my rear bar after I had twin exhausts fitted. I am sure there was a very comprehensive thread on this about 12 months ago.

Not sure what the deal is with the cutout coz I didn't do mine but click on my ride below & the part number for my Supercats are there. They are BIG, they are STRAIGHT THROUGH, they DON'T DRONE & they FIT .... they are 2 1/4"

When i was looking at doing a twin on my 380,i had a look around at what other manufactures had done and discovered that a rear twin diffuser ,exhaust cut out, insert, thingy from a 'gasp " Holden VE SV6 or Sv8 would almost fit straight into where we have the insert of our 380 rear bar...

....i never got round to actually fitting it,but holding the insert from the Holden up against the 380 rear bar ,it was so close it wasnt funny....

I've done a heap of research into twin mufflers and trial and error, but not the cutout in the rear bar on a non base model, as mine is a base model.

Three different exhaust places have told me that the Berklee BS0655 will not fit on the passeger side.

If it fitted I would definitely have fitted a pair of them ages ago.

However, a stock 380 muffler which is damn near as big fits on the passenger side of the TMR 380. With some help from Blackstar I have worked out that it is not flipped, it is fitted same way round as the drivers side muffler, but it is angled down at the front a bit to clear the petrol tank filler pipe guard. And the pipe joining up to it is a custom job.

And you're right, no cannons, they will drone like mad. If you want straight through mufflers for best performane you need to fit the biggest you can.

Foozer's Supercats are probably the best way to go if you want performance without drone, but they ain't cheap, that's the only reason I haven't got the same.

Instead I eventually went for a pair of non straight throughs, Lukey Turbo flow. Maybe lost a couple of killerwasps at the top end, meh, but they fit easilly on both sides, sound good, and no drone.

How much roughly are the Supercat SCM8802 mufflers? And do they sound similar to the Berklee muffler?

Hmm, no answer to my Supercat query. Oh well...
Anyway I finally got back to the exhaust shop where I had my Berklee fitted, and asked about the twin system. The guy said he CAN do it but was reluctant to cut the bar saying it won't be a perfect finish as the original cut-out - though he has done it before (I asked him) and can measure and cut it correctly, plus file it back. I said I knew it wouldn't look completely original as the new cut-out would lack the inner "eave" that the original cut-out has... but unless you're crouching at the back of the car, you won't see that. He agreed.
He said that the Berklee muffler will NOT fit on the other side (which I already knew) and recommended putting a smaller muffler in its place which would also have room for the split to be put in before the current flange. He said the new smaller muffler (a Walker I think) would not be too loud as the total volume of both would be the same as the current Berklee (he knew that 380s can drone badly with certain mufflers, etc).
Anyhow, he said with the 2 new mufflers, pipework, 2 tips, and cut-out, I'd be up for $420 and take 2-2.5 hours, which I thought was good (I recall someone here was quoted $500). I'll also check with another shop back in the old stomping grounds of my youth to get another opinion and quote.

$500 is a fair price. Thats what I paid for identical work Except I supplied the twin tips.. You are correct, You wont notice the new cutout unless you are directly underneath.

Grubco has a pov pack base model like me, so the rear bar cut out for the passenger side tip is a bit different to the cut out for a GT or VRX or SX.
My cutout is virtually undetectable as different to the stock cutout/recess on the drivers side.
As Grub says, you have to squat or lie down and get up close & personal with it to spot the difference. A following driver, even if he/she is tailgaiting, would be hard pressed to tell the difference.
My exhaust guy did the cut out when he fitted my twin system, only took him a few minutes to trace a template of the drivers side cut out, then flip it over to the passenger side, mark the shape and cut it out.

Yes, poverty pack here (ala Limited Edition, hehe). Your summary sounds good re the cut-out. As long as it can't be easily seen (and mine is black anyway), I'll all for it. Besides, I got whacked in the rear once, leaving only a hairline crack so its not a virgin anyway (so to speak).
I also said I don't mind if the new mufflers are a tiny bit louder/deeper than the Berklee, as long as there is no drone. I'm also happy to have something smaller and thinner - the Berklee looks like a beer keg under the back!

Oh yeah, that's right - yours was the $500. I was expecting $500 or more, but hoping not too much more. I really had no idea what it would cost, so really had to get the quote and ask all the fiddly questions I've tried to ask here in the past. I'm happy with the price, but will check one more back near where I grew up, just in case.
