I have this headunit, and its a 6cd stacker, but its not playing CDs now, and it seems the stacker has come out of alignment. Anyone got any insight to this?

Unfortunately the ability to play and/or eject CDs is the first thing to go on most CD players, the physical mechanism wears out. My TJ exec refused to spit out CDs, played them ok though. I went to a Mitsu dealer, thinking to replace it with an original, but to quote "its obsolete" and "some units cost up to $1,000". Translation: "No, we don't stock them, and even if we had them, you wouldn't like the price."

So I went next door to Autobahn and bought a Pioneer and some adapter cables and replaced the HU. (Bit of a job) This plays mp3 files, I can get about 15 CDs onto one MP3 disc, so it kinda makes a six stacker look obsolete. Also has AUX input. I didn't bother about iPod USB connectivity.

I prefer the Pioneer because it is adjustable to + or - 12 dB at 100 Hz, 1,000 Hz and 10,000 Hz, so any crappy/original speakers have a chance of sounding good. Never fails, this is my third Pioneer. lol A big improvement over the original HU.

You could take it out and get someone to look at it, but don't get your hopes up.
Perhaps investigate a single or double DIN replacement?

I was hoping to fix it on the cheap :)

I remember reading on the forums before I was a member someone said this sound system itself had a amp installed to it, know anything about that? cause its like 8 speaker system, I cant just get a 200 buck head unit and expect it to work (at least that was I told my Noosa car sound) But if I can just pick up a nice single DIN HU with iPhone connectivity, I would be stoked :)

No idea really. Someone who has a wiring diagram for this system or has pulled one apart needs to chime in here.

Has a wiring diagram anything possible but he would need a double din to fill the hole :( So more than $200.

dont need a double DIN, just a pocket if you are fitting a single din. get one out of a TL or something.
as for any factory external amplifiers, the speaker wires will be coming out of that, and all you will have to do is join in your headunit / new amp speaker wires there instead. But I'm not sure if these had extra amps with premium sound. As for "8" speakers, the 6x9's in the rear count as 4 cos they are coaxial, and then the mids and dash tweeters up front make 8....so really, only 6 if you wanna look at it that way.

No, theres no external amps, the "8" speakers are really just the mids in the doors with the dash and door tweets joined with a crude crossover, with the 6x9 co-axials in the rear.
Getting a Single Din is fine, use an adapter harness, though the downside is you'll lose the use of your steering wheel audio controls.

Any hot tips on a nice headunit then, either way? I just want something to run / charge my iPhone. and needs to be able to run my system... will I need an external amp for that?

I can go without my controls :)

Pioneer make some nice units with AUX, MP3 capability, iPod/iPhone charge and control of iPod from head unit for music playback. Fancy ones have bluetooth, if you want to do the hands free phonecalls-in-the-car bit. AutoBarn has them on special sometime, keep an eye out. If you can't install it yourself, it will be expensive on labour though. Not a 5 minute job putting it in.

I bought a basic Pioneer DEH-1350MPG for $129 today but this one does not have iPhone USB connectivity. Does the job for me though.

If your 8 speaker system is really just 4 channel with crossovers to mids and tweets, you won't need an extra amp.

Aftermarket if you want new, or occasionally if a car is wrecked or someone else upgrades, originals may come up for sale. Check with madmagna, he may have some in stock.
Or in the shopping secure section somewhere, there is a 7in double-din dvd/gps head unit I think, if you wanted to go that way.
Is your car still pretty new from a dealer? Can they do anything about fixing it, under warranty etc if it is?

my dealership didnt want to know about it, I took it to the local mitso guys and they said the same, dont want to know about it.

All seem to have the same head unit as yours, I cant see a price though. Hopefully the log books were in the cars with the radio codes to unlock them.

Sounds good, I shall be keeping an eye on the sales and get a nice HU :) As for the wiring and what not, I tend to be able to read a wiring diagram and what not, Just a matter of ripping out the old one :P

How much are you willing to pay for one in working condition?

what a OEM headunit? I will give it a miss Peter, If I am going to drop any cash on one, I might as well get a nice aftermarket one :)
