Peoples does anyone know if my TE:

a) has wiring for the map lights as part of the loom?

b) if there are mounting points, and if not, how to mount the sucker?

I don't really want to take my new lining off unless this project is going to be a success ;)

Thanks a heap!

No it will not. You will have to install the loom.

b) if there are mounting points, and if not, how to mount the sucker?

Yes mounts are there in the frame, but the brackets will need to be screwed to the mounts.

I don't really want to take my new lining off unless this project is going to be a success ;)

If you look carefully and get a position and trial fit the light, you can do the install without taking the headlining off.

Thanks a heap!

Mike.

yeah wires pass right by it. wired it in parrallel, when cutting headliner, start with a small hole using a stanely knife, and get bigger and bigger till its just enough

Excellent. I plan on hard-wiring the door-switched wire as well so both map lights come on when the door is opened. This will be awesome 8)

Yeah you could do that, dad did this on his nissan patrol, helped a lot. I was going to do it but I got footwell lights so I didn't think it was needed

Taken lining out and done a few tests with the multi. I don't think I can get it to work when the doors are open because the door wire acts as an earth when the doors are open (the active is +12v, and the door wire is +12v when the doors are shut and 0v (-0.22 really) when a door is open). I think the normal dome takes care of this in it's switching but the standard map lights can't (the chasis is the earth in all cases).

Does this sound reasonable or am I a complete git and am overlooking something?

you would have to create a short circuit to the door wire, i thought the door wire was a negative.
i thought the center light used the chasis for a - when you want the light on, and the - door wire was for when you used the doors. with a constant + going to it

any chance you do this with a TW?

don't see why not. In the TE the loom goes straight past the mounting point, so you can avoid taking the lining out. I did take the lining out however because I wanted to be sure. Good idea to disconnect the battery too - I was trying to get the polarity right on a LED and it blew a fuse (the one that is a pain in the arse to get out).
