Without coding the key will only open doors...

Will be interesting to know if he coded it though, also, what dealership gave you that quote and was that also coded to the car, I got a new key for my wagon today for under $100 from a dealership, will not put the exact price here but suffice to say I can arrange the keys for you for that sort of price plus then coding to the car so you would be up for about $135 all up.
Can not do this for interstate people as I need to first see proof of ownership before I would even be tempted to do this

coded and all
you have to have the car there, drove home with the key ,
he said it runs a code 46 i think which is the new version and also the more expensive one,
i paid the 100
he gave me a transmiter called a snoop which gos attached to the old key , you turn the key to acc and off again twice the 2 lights go on the snoop and it records the signal, then took it back he hooks the snoop and the key to the coder and then cut the key for me thats it
mitsubishi dandenong and that was coded and cut

Yes, know the ones, these are pretty much replicating the code from your existing key to a new one so the BEM or Immob does not know the difference, is looking for a particular set of codes, gets them and is then happy
There are 2 code types, there is the TE-F and then in the TH they changed the chip type and that carried all the way to the TW
TE/F keys, immob and ecu can easily be programmed into other cars and mixed and matched if you have a MUTT but TH onwards are all write once only thus once a key has been programmed into a BEM< it can not be used with another, same goes with BEM and ECU
Can the keys that are coded at a locksmith be re-coded to match another key? When I got my KH it only came with one key that was from a locksmith, if I get a new one from the VIN through a mitsubishi dealer can the locksmith key that I already have be re-flashed to look the same as the new key I get so that any keys left floating around out there won't start my car? The mits. dealer said that I need to have all keys with me when I get them coded, as any that I don't have with me when it's coded will still open locks but won't start the car anymore.

Your best bet is to find out the company who made your copy key and then from there ask them if you give them a new genuine key can they then match the code on the copy key you have
