View Full Version : Headunit suggestions
What would you recommend i replace my stocker headunit with?
i want something that must be able to play mp3 wma and cdrw discs,
have good enuf quality to drive a couple of subs down the track but needs to be powerful enuf to drive some 6x9's and maybe a set of splits without an amp for the time being.
oh it should look the shit too, and not worried wether single or double din - double din is preferred..
Thanks

Dunno if many units will play wma and stuff like that, but you'll probably find the cheapest MP3 unit you'll find is one in the JVC line for about $300... As for power, forget about it... HU's will only produce about 25W RMS... Far too little to go loud..
I was looking for something similar.. Settled on an Alpine 7893R... at about $900 though, it doesn't look like something I'm going to be buying any time soon...

The aussie version is the DEH-5550.
I have one and about 4 other aussiemagna members.

The JVC decks look good and the new Alpine ones play WMA and MP3.
My friend has a Panasonic MP3 deck and it can't play a lot of mp3 cd's that work in my car (Alpine 7894RB)
The Alpine is really good in terms of playing MP3's, it has a feature called Media Xpander(MX) that makes MP3's sound almost like cd :)

Pioneer all the way...
Sorry i am a little biased but i think they are great.
Pioneer HU + Pioneer Speakers + Kicker Amps = Bloody Winner!
ok that pioneer was sorta the one i was looking at but that sony one that GBM said was 699 is bloody sexy fromt hat photo..
hmm
how important is the rca output voltage for when i hook up subs?
is there anything else i should know or look out for when buying a HU?
the audio side of this is still really new to me.

I'm going to get shot for this but.... sony........ ewwww!!!!
Sorry.. =P
One of my friends had that Pansonic unit... Seems like my friends like panasonic actually.. another one has the model below it.. When I think about it though, he had a rotary knob, not a push-button-crap sort... oh well..
There is a JVC model that you should be able to get for $300... (not sure if that was RRP or not though)

Can you justify this? Are you talking from personal experience? A mate told you?
Wheres the facts for this?
Pretty broad generalisation there!?

well u look at all the sound quality cars...the ones that have the best sq readings... noone uses japanesse made speakers..... sure they use nakamichi headunits but thats it. u only got to listen to the german/american brands and u can hear the difference.
compare $400-500 pioneer, sony, kenwood splits... sure they sound ok for dance and that.. but play a song with vocals like SQ vocals and then compare the sound difference to a pair of MB quartz or any of the good american brands for the same price and u'd be putting the japaneese speakers in the rear parcel shelf as fill
they are just so much more accurate, hand made precise engineering, unline the japaneese ones which are prob made in taiwan or somethign they sell them in marlows..... thats how good they are

Really, sound quality is always going to be a personal thing...and it isn't based purly on the speakers...
Different H/U, amps, crossovers and wiring can all make the same set of speakers sound completly different!
