I would be grateful for any advice on whether or not I should be confident to continue to tow my 800kg campertrailer+kids gear, etc with my Magna.I've just spent $3400 on having my auto recond.+gearset replaced[$1300part]after trans. failure at 100000km.I've only towed for about5000km and my auto specialist reckons the gearsets are no good for heavy work.Is he right?I'm reluctant to sell my otherwise trusty Magna and am happy to spend quoted $450 on additional fluid cooler as suggested by Glenn at ask.com.I'd be interested to know if anyone has good or bad experience with towing with the TJII 4speed[sportshift type 2?]trans.Many thanks,Mick.

Did the mechanic show you which bits failed? If the gearsets are "no good for heavy work" did he show you the point of failure, how they failed?
Some TJ boxes fail through a spring breaking, and this has nothing to do with towing.
Keep the Magna now that you have spent money on it, and install a cooler if you want to.
I doubt if 5,000 km of towing out of 100,000 km is the cause.
Have you seen any signs of overheating while towing? I think the neutral light starts flashing, or something.
Just my 2 cents worth.

I call BS here,
Have a customer who did 26000km in a 3.0 TF with a 4x4 camper trailer, no issues and no issues since either.
The Magna is good at towing given it is a FWD and also for the cost of the so called reco trans, you paid way too much IMO, a cheaper secondhand unit would have been better than use the spare coin to filter it and cool it, and still have enough money left over for many of the fun parks when you get to QLD

Don't have any towing experience but have had a Magna auto trans recoed in the past. I'd ask your auto specialist why he thinks the gearset is no good. I'd also check the quote for the reconditioning to find out if genuine parts were used. For what you say you paid, I would expect genuine parts. Just a thought, but if the gearset was non-genuine, this may be the reason for his concern.
Is the trans under warranty following the reconditioning? IMO you should keep the car, especially if there is a warranty. Far cheaper to fit a trans cooler and maybe a filter than replace the car.

Another note, for $450 I could almost fir 2 trans coolers for you, fitted price for the Derale ones is $220 (2 hours labout plus cooler kit) actually takes nearly 3 hours to fit but this is the price I am offering them for at the moment
