View Full Version : Overheating 380
Hi all,
lurked around this forum for a while and read with interest many of the threads on here.
Now to my problem. After falling victim to the dreaded 'falling window' syndrome about a month ago on my 05 DB 380 vrx and temporarily repairing it with the correct sized piece of timber lol to stop it rattling about and keep it up until I get a chance to fix it properly I now have a major overheating problem.
The story is as follows. My wife and the car is in Queensland, I am in Sydney so I can't just go and have a look. She rang today and said:
"The car made a noise like a high pitch sound and the A/C stopped working. I looked at the dash and the temp gauge was up near the red. I drove home, about 2 mins away, and when I stopped the car it was making a gurgling sound and steam was coming from under the bonnet."
When I spoke to her, the car had cooled down and I ran her through some troubleshooting on the phone.
1- Radiator was very short of water, refilled with tap water for testing.
2- Fans come on when A/C turned on so thermo fans work.
3- Fans turn on when water temp warms up so fan thermostat working, relay working.
4- Water temp gauge rises very quickly towards red while idling.
5- No obvious signs of water loss in engine bay, no steam or water spray to be seen.
6- Top radiator hose gets 'hot' to touch, not sure how hot though.
7- Radiator cap not so hot.
Anyone have any idea of the problem? Water pump issue, thermostat in cooling circuit problem or possible bottom radiator hose squashing in? Any advice or theories appreciated.

Is it still under warranty? Have you been getting regular services done? Sounds like your water pump has failed.
I would just take it to a Mitsi dealer.

This part says to me straight away that it may have thrown a belt. No belt = no a/c & no water pump?
Thanks for the input guys.
Serviced reasonably on schedule, not still in warranty as 2005+5yrs= 2010. Front of engine has been looked at and both belts are on, as I posted not there to look at, but will ask if they actually are going around when engine on tomorrow.

Belts dont drive water pump. Poss stuck thermostat or seized water pump but eother way dont even start it until diagnosed as if a seized water pump this can snap timing belt and be expensive
Thanks Mal, I'll get her to call mobile mech to check it out.
Got my ex father in law to check it out, dodgy thermostat. Thanks for the help.

Bit more info for the memory bank....
02/08 GTL at 99111 kms with temp gauge showing 3/4 when it normally runs just under 1/2. First indication was when checking mailbox noticed the thermo fans were running and no aircon on. Climate control set at 21C. Recirc indicator light was on and couldn't be turned off. Coolant level checked good as did radiator airflow/blockages. Could drive (highway) at 100kph and temp would go to 3/4. Coast down a hill and knock into N, hold engines revs to 2500 and temp drops back to normal and recirc light could be turned off but the moment transmission engaged and driving in town or highway, temp back up to 3/4. Still under :mits: warranty so was checked at the dealer.
Turns out to be thermostat - replaced and is okay :dancin:.
Second one they have replaced in a month .

Reminds me of my old gj sigma...loved that car...thermostats dodgy...mitsu thing i dunno but glad u got it sorted mate.
Its at these ages that cars show their true character...flawless machines are all good but its the little temperamental bits that force us owners to love em or dump em. Not so related to op but i think the patterns of probs we see nowadays will test how well engineered these cars were. So far i cant complain.
Unless of course it breaks down in bf nowhere..then u hate it like ur ex. :-)

i was driving up the highway today at 100kms/hr and then noticed my temperature is at 3/4th and has never seen this problem. Since I was on my way somewhere I didnt bother to stop and also it was still on the white area and not gone all the way to the red. And on my way coming back I noticed a 3/4th temp on the gauge and drove it all the way back on the highway about 40kms. Before I was just reaching home I noticed the aircon was going a bit warm because it was set on Auto at 20 degrees. I thought its my gas running out or compressor. But after I reached home I switched the car off and tried aircon again and it was working fine. Both fans are working.
From the read above I guess its my thermostat too. got to get it checked ASAP.
Cheers Guys!
