View Full Version : Communication Error - ABS error

I had a mechanic friend around today to try to connect up the ECU/loom on the project engine. I found out that we do not have the ABS module...and we have a 'communication error' on the centre display. I assume the lack of ABS ECU would be the cause...has anyone experienced this error?

looking in the service manual there also seems to be a window ecu and an airconditioning ecu...damn can bus systems...

no aircon or stereo controls connected its a canbus error. nothing will show on the display regarding abs or anything other than the comfort features.

Yeah, that's just because you are missing the radio / climate control facia.

oh bloody hell I have to have both of these too or is it the one unit? another phone call to a wrecker!

It's only the one unit with all the buttons on it, just what you see when it's all assembled.

The absence of the cd stacker/climate control shouldn't stop your engine running, it will just give a comms fault on the screen. Did you try running it without the abs module? It may be ok but could also put it into limp mode.

For those of us (including me) who have NFI what a can-bus is!

"Applications - Automotive

A modern automobile may have as many as 70 electronic control units (ECU) for various subsystems.[3] Typically the biggest processor is the engine control unit (also engine control module/ECM in automobiles); others are used for transmission, airbags, antilock braking, cruise control, audio systems, windows, doors, mirror adjustment, etc. Some of these form independent subsystems, but communications among others are essential. A subsystem may need to control actuators or receive feedback from sensors. The CAN standard was devised to fill this need.

The CAN bus may be used in vehicles to connect engine control unit and transmission, or (on a different bus) to connect the door locks, climate control, seat control, etc. Today the CAN bus is also used as a fieldbus in general automation environments, primarily due to the low cost of some CAN Controllers and processors.

Bosch holds patents on the technology, and manufacturers of CAN-compatible microprocessors pay license fees to Bosch, which are normally passed on to the customer in the price of the chip. Manufacturers of products with custom ASICs or FPGAs containing CAN-compatible modules may need to pay a fee for the CAN Protocol License."

I think it saves on wiring costs? Not sure.

EDIT:

"CAN is the abbreviation for Controller Area Network"
"The wiring complexity is low. This factor plays an especially large role in automobiles."

From what I read it saves over 2.5 km of wiring harness and reduces weght by 50 kgs.
First car to use this new technology was a BMW several yaers ago.
Very interesting stuff

As much as 50 Kg of wiring? Worth doing then. Cool stuff, really high tech. Just wait though, until something goes wrong with it, I hope that the Mitsu dealer has the right scanning equipment. lol

same error code on the screen as on the scanner.
Will send key and ecu away to get checked as to compatibility.
Starter motor turns and dash lights up.
