View Full Version : Electrochromic mirror wiring

Hey all,
Firstly, I don’t have even the slightest knowledge of anything electrical, so bear with me.
I had an electrochromic mirror wired into my car, off of the front map/dome lights. When I picked the car up from the auto-electrician, the mirror was not working, but the sparky assured me it would start working when it go dark. When it didn't start working, I took it back and he changed the order of the wires in the plug that clips into the back of the mirror. It seemed to work, the little green light came on, so I drove home. But when I was driving home, the mirror started to bubble and turn bronze until I could no longer see out of the mirror. It also made a creaking sound and started emptying itself of very toxic smelling liquid. :S
So it seems that the mirror was connected with reverse polarity and ruined. That’s something I’ll be taking up with the idiot who installed it.
But at the end of all of this, my question is, what order do the wires go in on the plug?
This is how the wires are ordered on the plug at the moment.

Any direction or help would be greatly appreciated.

Pin #1 - Constant voltage. Supplied from fuse/ign switch. Black-blue wire.
Pin #2 - Earthed - Black wire.
Pin #3 - Not used.
Pin #4 - Drivers drivers side mirror. Black-green wire.
Pin #5 - Drivers drivers side mirror. Black-red wire.
Pin #6 - Not used.
Pin #7 - Not used.
Pins 4 and 5 are only used if you have the drivers side EC mirror. Your EC mirror should function fine without the drivers side mirror.

Jesus, you’d think he would have looked at a diagram or something before just doing it.
Well, at least I know now. Thanks guys.

Well copy and paste the pic and go back, if he says it's not his fault and its a faulty unit, show him the pic and get him to replace freea of charge.

Want a copy of the wiring diagram?
Grelise's plug matches exactly what I've typed.

Pins #1 and #2 are all you'll need. In Grelise's photo it's the 2 right wires going to the plug.

Excellent. Thanks again guys, I'll be going to see him tomorrow and getting this issue squared away.
You have the wire colours correct, but I'm not sure of the pin positions you quoted
Im quoting the pin positions of the plug itself
Pin 1 - Ign Switch (Acc) - Black with Blue
Pin 2 - Earth - Black Wire
Pin 4 - Remote Control for Mirror - Black with Green
Pin 5 - Remote Control for Mirror- Black with Red
Pin 4 and 5 are used to drive the external EC Mirror
EDIT: Everybody beat me too it ... lol

I have one of those hoodakies on my wagon, and I reckon that a stock/non electric mirror wins, all day every day!
That's just me though! :kb:

So, did you get the autoelect to replace your mirror?

Yes mate. He was all defensive at first and said that he had wired it correctly (despite the wiring diagram and picture provided)
He only decided to do something about it when I said that I intended on taking the matter up with a lawyer. Needless to say, his attitude changed pretty quickly.
It’s a shame he wasn’t honest enough to just admit his mistake, but I’m happy, I ended up with a fully functioning electrochromic mirror.
All’s well that ends well I guess.

With the drivers wing mirror does any one know which is positive and negative at the main plug for the mirror as i am running a new wire through my mirror and putting the E/C glass into to it to save painting another mirror

Not sure miss chicken. As long as you match the wires to the pins as per the pic above you should be alright, that is if you have the rear view mirror too as it's all triggered from that.

i have the Rear view mirror and know what the changes to the colours are on the main pin for the mirror It's just I ran new wires into the mirror as it was easier then pulling apart the mirror it self and using the original wires. I just wondered what colour the + and - wires on the actual glass of the mirror where
